The better alternative is what if he had come back to LSU. Or what if he simply had not come back to an SEC school.

Saban doesnt become the greatest coach ever without leaving for the pros imo. That experience at Miami is what allowed him to refocus and dedicate his entire life to college football.

Had he stayed and not scratched that curious itch, I’m not sure LSU ever gets the saban Bama had

I have always heard a rumor that Nick called LSU from Miami and asked if he could come back. Terry loved it in Baton Rouge. Can you imagine if our AD said sure come on back and handed Miles his buyout. Would never happen but in hindsight that would have been the best decision.

I'm pretty sure that the LSU AD wouldn't have taken him back out of sheer spite. The coaching search to replace Saban found another "up and coming" coach in Miles (tongue firmly in cheek), the entire Tiger nation was still pissed at Saban for abandoning them, and Miles was still playing with Saban's players at that point, (and wasn't a half-bad coach for the game as it was being played then).

Just my opinion, but I don't think LSU would have taken Saban back at that point unless he crawled on his hands and knees down Highland Road shouting "Shame, Shame, Shame" as penance for ever leaving LSU in the first place.

I don’t disagree, but without Dinardo starting it, Saban probably fails here b/c we don’t give him enough time

The talent we had on Saban's first team in 2000 was very, very good.
There were quite a few Sunday players on that team.

and where did that talent come from?

I'll repeat what I said that Dinardo was not a good coach. He was never going to win big here b/c he's not a good x's and o's guy.
He recruited great, and found a way to keep in state talent when they were pouring out before he got here.
Dinardo understood what was special about LSU, and also what was needed off the field for us to be successful and he was successful at changing that part of the program around.
What he did, outside of coaching and winning games, set up the next guy for success. We still needed to make the right hire, which we did, but that next hire after Dinardo had so much more to work with than what Dinardo had when he was hired. Had Dinardo not done what he did in his short time here, then that next hire would have been starting from scratch to turn the program around. Maybe he's successful and is here for a long time, or maybe he struggles rebuilding a program. We'll never know.
Just saying to be thankful for what Dinardo started, even though he wasn't the long term guy for the job, what he did was pivotal to our success going forward.

I agree completely. Dinardo wasn't a bad coach. He just made the wrong hires on his staff after his original coaches left.

He hired that Tepper SOB who said it takes 6 1/2 years, then you'll have my system down. The OC he replaced Watts with (McConnell?) wasn't worth a blank either.

Gerry pretty much stopped the mass exodus of the boot blue chips to Nebraska, FSU, Colorado and Tennessee, and definitely teed up the ball for Saban at LSU.

I have to admit that watching him on Saturdays on gameday is enjoyable. He’s very likeable on tv. Comes across really personable which i frankly didn’t expect.

After reading the entire thread, I think the consensus is that LSU's ascent from the depths was a process. Saban was the most visible element, but it was a process that started before he got here.

In other words, LSU was the perfect place for someone like Saban to come and develop into the GOAT the world knows him as today. It benefitted both parties, and even though Nick went on to become the Gump Goblin King he was still the catalyst that turned the roux into gumbo.

Just my opinion after reading the thought of other posts in this thread.

How can you not be sure about Toledo? His Toledo exit was by far the worst of all of his coaching stops.

I do not know the story so that is how. Give me the details, since you obviously know them.

Saban was already wearing thin here with his "don't speak to me in the hallway" personality. He's mellowed quite a bit, but at LSU he was still in full a-hole mode.

Boy, do these two sentences ring true. For example, think of Skip's "We already have a list" reaction to Nick offering a list of possible replacements.

Bama fans want their coach to be an a-hole in a way that it isn't tolerated at LSU.

Take it for what it's worth.

Most LSU fans hated Nick because he was at our bitter rival. Now that he's retired, most don't hate him anymore.

Saban gets 100% of the credit for the turnaround job that Dinardo had done, basically, 60% of.
