re: I truly don’t understand why Welch doesn’t see the field

The coaches, who see these guys every day in practice, think we are better with him on the bench.
The issue is these same coaches had Perkins at ILB, and both Penn and Weeks on the bench. They also started Chestnut over Harris and let Lacy drop multiple big passes in game 1 before giving most of his reps to Hilton and Anderson. Speaking of Anderson, they touted him as an all world punt returner only to have him muff the first one and never be given another opportunity.
Forgive me if I don't blindly trust the coaches to know which players will perform best when given the opportunity.

BK has never seen this talent...I wonder if he's trying to use off-the-field performances to influence who plays

I also am puzzled by this. Curious to see if they start playing Welch at Corner opposite of Denver Harris.

a good reason, and one to use if you really trust Kelly, is not that they don't have the talent, but they are youngsters who will make mistakes and he doesn't want them to crack their fragile egos. Players can be ruined by being thrown into action too soon. sometimes a player's mental condition allows the coach to throw him in there as a rookie. DB;s can really look bad out on the field and their mistakes are exposed to the whole crowd

Maybe we should start playing more man coverage if all of our DBs are better at it?
I know I'd like to see more of it, but I'm not paid to make those decisions.

I think we have to cycle in the younger players @ DB to see if we can improve that unit.

Lol looks like Tarzan plays like Jane

Seems like we have some solid man to man corners. Maybe we should try to run it some more lol

No reason to not mix in the young guys. The more experienced players are missing assignments anyways. At some point a coach has to be able to adjust his scheme to what fits his most talented players.

Within the scope of a full college football season, these things were corrected swiftly and with intent. This is an ignorant criticism.
In Denver Harris case, his issues had nothing to do with talent.
Brian Kelly has been fair about playing the best players regardless of class, or even off the field issues like Harris this year and Boutte last year

He clearly hasn't paid his debts.

Sure sure got "aligned" quickly, after Coleman exposed our weaknesses at CB.

Yes, random internet sports board posters know best

I don’t think this had anything to do with talent. Harris wasn’t even with the team just a week before that. That was definitely disciplinary. He started game 2.

He got taken off of the kickoff team as well. Kelly said in his press conference that they weren’t going to give up on him from just 1 muff, so it must’ve been something that continued to happen in practice.

What other choice do you have? In the case of Welch, it’s pretty clear he’s been passed up by Stamps. When a true freshman is getting reps before him, it isn’t because the coaches “value experience”. It should tell you where they see him as a player at the moment.

He's probably best in man to man coverage and we run a frick ton of zone.
I'm certainly not "the coach is an idiot" guy but if you have two guys at corner who are really good at man, and you've been dogshite running zone with the guys you got out there..........well...........adjust to your personnel and call more man.

Not before we lost our opener. I also don't remember Miles or O having to make wholesale changes after the opener all that often but with Kelly its been 2 years in a row. I get last year he didn't really know his team yet but this year there should be no reason for half the defense to be replaced after the opener in year 2.
I am not down on Kelly overall because as you said, he sees the issue and makes the changes quickly. But this thread is about giving a guy a chance at a position that is struggling and with the info we have, the fact that a guy hasn't played yet does not mean they aren't possibly the best guy for the job.

I don't care if they try Welch, Stamps, or a walk on. But good lord TRY SOMETHING!
If it fails miserably, you can go back to the guys that are playing now and at least we know that no stone was left unturned.

Neither of them inherited a program in the shape Kelly did either.
And specifically in 2023, the whole defense is basically new players. A bunch of them not even with the program last year. I understand big boy CFB is cut throat but they deserve a little bit of grace here.

He’s not ready to play.
You want 5-6 busted coverages a game instead of 2?
The coaches know what they are doing.
