I salute Dale Brown
Whatever faults he may have had, the guy loves LSU.

When I was in law school, the man took time to correspond with me, in response to a letter I sent to him and the team after they had been called "thugs" by a couple of whiney SEC journalists just because Greg Cook cold- cocked some a-hole from Miss. State. Dale didn't really know me from Adam. But he sent a very nice response wishing me good luck in school.I'll never forget that.I thought it was a very cool courtesy on his part.

People used to say he was this great motivator but wasn't much of a X's and O's coach. I don't really agree with that. I think he had so many irons in the fire that basketball might not have gotten the attention from him that other coaches put into it. I know of a girl personally that he met one day and after hearing her story helped her go to LSU when she couldn't afford it. he may have even paid for it himself, not sure. He was famous for helping just random people, he is sure a great man.

DB is a Great guy!
I wrote him a letter one day asking how he motivates his kids and he invited me to a practice to “see for myself.” Afterward, he sat with me for over an hour and showed me around and we discussed everything from basketball to teaching. Wonderful experience! I’ll never forget him. He is so caring.

re: I salute Dale Brown
Many years ago his alma mater Minot St was playing a playoff game in Abilene TX I sent a letter inviting him to Abilene and said I would be glad to show him around. I never expected a response. But a received a hand written letter expressing his regrets and appreciation. He also sent a copy of one of his books. This was in the early 80’s.

Several years later my family and I saw coach at a restaurant in Madisonville. He spoke to my my family like we were longtime friends. I mentioned the invitation I had extended 20 plus years earlier. He said he remembered the invitation. He probably didn’t but made me feel good about it.

Good man.

I criticize others too much. I am pessimistic many times over. I would have loved to have had coach Brown as my father. Coach Brown is a generous man. I am gonna miss him one day.

I've always thought very high of him. He always seemed to be genuine and just a great guy to be around. It's hard to fine a coach like that anymore. Unfortunately, it's become all about money and not about staying at a university and building a tradition!

re: I salute Dale Brown
To me Dale brown is exactly what I think of when I think of LSU. Teaching life lesson was as if not more important than teaching basketball. Me him once I was 7 at ole miss LSU in 89. As he was giving an interview he stopped took my program and signed it. I still stood there l, he stopped again asking was there something else. I being a kid asked if he could get cj and Ricky off the bus. Gracious and kind said he couldn’t once they make it on the bus but stopped Lyle mouton so he could sign. His last year watching him beat Arkansas leaving the pmac for the last time a winner but he won more than just basketball games. He touched any and every person he made contact with. Some small some big. I’m a big fan of Dale Brown Court

Yeah? Why do you think all that talent came to play for Dale Brown? Cause they liked tradition?

I was at LSU when John Williams showed up driving a souped up brand new Cutless(?).

Regardless of veracity - a car for John Williams wouldn’t bother Coach Brown in the least. As long it was going to someone that (1) was less fortunate than he and (2) he thought deserved it. I don’t know of any real proof of illegal compensation of athletes by Coach. But I do know of real proof of his helping people.

re: I salute Dale Brown
Many years ago there was a kid where I lived who was restricted to a wheel chair his entire life. He got to middle school and his mother was at my office one day and saw some LSU stuff on the wall and told me her son loved LSU basketball.

I called the basketball office and told his secretary what the deal was. I asked if they could send him some souvenir type stuff and she said she'd tell Coach Brown.

After hanging up I thought we'd never hear anything from this.

Few days later the mom called me and said not only did they mail her cripple son some stuff but Dale called the kid and talked for about 15 minutes. They have never forgotten this to this day.

Dale has always lived life to his own drum beat.

He built LSU into a very relevant program in the 80's and early 90's. And in tow with his non-conformist personality, he pissed off the NCAA establishment.

Dale received way too much criticism for his failures than he did for his successes. He's always been a unique person with genuine care for players, people and life. And was a great coach and mentor.

He just didn't have the personality to throw chairs and bully anyone around him.

re: I salute Dale Brown
When I was a young man of 25 years old, I was living 600 miles from home(BR) when I was diagnosed with a type of cancer that had a 20% survival rate. I got a copy of his book, Don’t Count Me Out. After reading this, it set my mind right to where I could muster up the courage to fight this battle. I sent Coach Brown a letter thanking him for having published that book and how it helped me. Not only did he write me back, he sent me 2 tickets to the LSU game that was coming up in a couple of weeks. As fate would have it, I ran into him at a hotel in town the day of the game. Talked for about 10 minutes. Never forget this man as long as I live. Which is 56 years and counting.

I have written to Coach Brown several times since I was a senior in high school in KY 1986. I wrote to him just begging him to find a way to beat UK in the NCAA Tournament. He responded with a nice letter and a package of several game programs from that season.

I got to meet him the next year when I started as a freshman at LSU, and in the years since graduating I have exchanged notes, e-mails and letters with him several times. He ALWAYS takes the time to personally respond. He is truly one of the greatest men of our time. I absolutely LOVE this man!

re: I salute Dale Brown
My brother and I were at the Vandy-LSU game in Nashville late 80's. LSU won, and we waited at the LSU bus after the game to congratulate the team. Met Dale and he invited us on the bus and introduced us to the team. He didn't have to give us the time of day, but did. Dale talks the talk, and then walks the walk. No one has ever done more for LSU.
