I don't understand why people are cutting Pelini slack

Yes he received a depleted roster but damn dude be an actual coach. Anyone can go into a game with a general scheme, get torched all game and refuse to adjust. Coaching is about making in game adjustments to set your players up for the best opportunity for success. It was stubborn and stupid playing calling.

ETA: If you didn't think Pelini was a dumbass before read this article that S shared. Either he had MS money line or he has no clue what he is doing. PFF Article

The Defense didn't do THAT bad in the first half. The problem was that they were on the field pretty much the entire half thanks to the completely f*cking inept passing of Brennan.

By the second half, the D was out of gas and that's when State started going up and down the field.

Agreed, but I don't see too many cutting slack. People were blasting him on Saturday and ever since then.

If you thought man was bad, imagine a bunch of freshman and inexperienced players running a zone. Spoiler alert, it ends up with a bunch of DB’s pointing fingers at each other and wide open touchdowns. At least this way there was someone in the frame most of the time.

I think it was a situation of trying to keep it simple for young players with little offseason, although obviously that didn’t work.

I was not happy with the defense, but you can't fire the coach after just one game.

You are joking right? DBs in high school run zone most of the time and if they aren't practicing zone in practice that is a much larger issue. Zone would have mitigated some of those large runs after the catch too.

The defense forced 4 turnovers including a pick 6. Stingley didn’t play, Evans just got here. Offense has to help the defense out.

The best DC with more experienced players allowed 600+ yds to Ole Miss last year.

Keep in mind they had four defenders go in the top 100 of the draft. Three were underclassmen.

They were missing 13 guys that regularly contributed to the defense last year.

This depth chart was from July.

Look at it now

Early in the game he realized the problems we were having in man.

Their first scoring drive we went from a 4-2-5 formation blitzing and playing man, to a 3-3-5 playing zone blitz schemes.

When you have a true freshman, true sophomore, and a walk-on as your three primary corners, it is highly unlikely that you have success in coverage.

People forget a similar West Virginia offense threw for 400+ against what was possibly the most talented secondary in college football history.

The difference in that game and the MSU game was the amount of experience at all three levels of the defense.

Step back from the ledge. We have 5 total returning starters.

This is a very good point. It took Aranda a year and a half before last year's squad could play halfway decent zone.

Its a more cerebral scheme, and we have a bunch of green dudes. Zone is something you have to commit to to do it well.

State is actually a pretty damn good offense with Leach calling plays. Good QB. First-round, CEH type running back and a couple decent receivers.

Pelini went with an aggressive plan and the pressure didn't effect the qb like they probably thought it would. Costello is good.

Is that as bad as over 600 passing yards and giving up 3rd down conversions left and right, several of which for TDs?

We know what we did didn't work at all. I'd have like to see your hypothetical. It literally couldn't have been worse than what actually happened.

There is a reason Aranda is HC of a power 5 program right now and Pelini was at a school like Youngstown State.

I’d rather there be a DB close enough to make a play than wide open streakers down the middle of the field. Man is a more simple scheme. Switching to zone would have been even worse (somehow).

I would have tried some zone, but I don’t think the results would have been any better.

I don’t think people are, the QB is always the first position to get credit/blame though

MooState telling their RT at halftime to hold Ali on every play was a game changer. Lost all the disruption he was bringing in the first half.
