Paul had some health issues that affected how much time he could devote to coaching. You could clearly see it in the dugout. Everytime he would turn his neck he would wince. The guy was in pain. Let him be
Don't doubt he had some health issues that caused discomfort sometimes during practice or games. But how many 50+ year olds don't have some, or many, of those pains?
Truth is Scott told PM how it was going to be and SW should end up getting a major raise for doing that and hiring Jay Johnson. JJ will win several to many championships here at LSU in the next 20 years, championships taht would not be won by PM. Just look at the enthusiasm about the baseball program being exhibited now that has not been present since before Skip stepped down. Great move by SW.

Nah he was great up until we lost the CWS final
Actually, I think we had a pretty solid team the covid year. It's a shame that season got cancelled.

How many times do you see a “players coach” win a championship?
A lot of times. Les Miles, Bobby Bowden, Pete Carroll, Dabo Swinney for examples.

Coach Mainieri is still very involved with the program. If you don’t know that you aren’t very connected

You can probably say that about everyone on this board. I don't like this thread but how can a fan do more for a program than any coach? A lot of these comments and the thread itself are completely pointless. Period

I already feel sorry for Johnson, one day!

Ikr. It's easy to look at our struggles in the last few seasons under PM and shite on him but he had a successful tenure at LSU. Multiple SEC titles, multiple trips to the CWS and a national championship. For some reason (which is stupid) some people choose to shite on former coaches. I don't get it.

That covid year team was going to likely get eaten by sec play.
Paul had a great 08 and 09 with his return to Omaha and the title. Then he proceeded to take some years off which he admitted to doing, then returned us close to glory and finally got us back to a cws series and just couldn’t finish it and then back down hill.

Coach Mainieri won approximately 69% of his games at Lsu and led the team with class, It was his time to go and he left. No reason at all to speak badly about him.

His rosters were consistently small at positions where guys aren’t traditionally small.
You think 2nd basemen are traditionally big guys?

but he had way more Cole Freemans, Brandt Broussards, Jordan Twins, and Tyler Hanovers
Jordan twins were both 200+ pounds
It seems like you just think anyone under 6 ft can’t play baseball, which it strange because some of our best and most productive players have been under 6 feet.

Understand? The rules are different.
Johnson is capitalizing on what Bertman and Paul built.
Unlike Basketball, LSU Baseball is now the Blue blood of the Diamond.

I was not A huge Paul hater but it was time.
This is job with a high demand in a person if you aren’t 100% in you’re gonna fall behind.

I had lunch with him a few months after he retired, he was a different man. His neck problems were much less painful, the scowl was gone replaced by a smile. Love CJJ, but I'll never shite on Manieri.

He retired before he got fired
It would have been dreadful last season with that pitching staff under Dunn

Pawl represented LSU baseball with dignity and class, and he brought home a Natty.
Great coach, great person.
