Should we check Skenes FR/So stats at AF as well?

Skenes is one of the best ever right now, and he’s not done yet… so, could end up the best, but you’re leaving some really amazing names out of consideration.

He has to go undefeated and win 14 games with a sub 1.98 ERA and 3 CG out of pitching in 17.
Beat that, which he may very well, we will have an argument. UK had Skenes ERA at 6 FWIW. They are the type of team that can hit without trying to drive out a HR every AB.

NOLA had dead bats and not the same balls so I’m discounting his time at LSU some. HOWEVER, he had the best command next to Peever and McDonald with multiple pitches PLUS he was the VERY BEST I’ve ever seen at LSU with holding runners on and picking them off.

I would love to know what Ben would throw on todays radar guns. Also the hitters didn’t strikeout back then like they do now and the bats were way hotter in the late 80’s.

Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews are the two best players to ever don an LSU baseball uniform and we’re luckily enough to be able to watch them play on a weekly basis on the same team. Count your blessings.

I don't want to discount anything Nola did either. He was great. But because of CPM's emphasis on defense he arguably had a better team behind him in the field than anyone else in the conversation.

The bats were completely dead and the balls were not like these so there weren’t nearly the threat of HRa hit. So he pitched to contact as you stated because of the elite defense that resulted in low pitch counts and last longer as a result. You still have to command multiple pitches and he absolutely did and was a master at his craft.

It’s going to be tough for any LSU position player to put up the stats Belle did in the 90’s

Belle was mid-late 80s.

Skenes is striking out over 17 per 9 .
After today it could be over 18 per 9 . Haven’t figured up the new number after tonight’s start . He’s on pace to set the ncaa record for ks per 9 , if I’m remembering correctly.

Been going to LSU games since 88. Ben didn’t have the slider that Skenes has in his pitch arsenal. Have a 90 mph slider to go with a 100 mph fastball isn’t fair.

Nola was so good in 2014 teams did what Auburn did last night and pitch their ace on Saturday.

Skenes is probably the best I’ve seen in a long time not just at LSU but anywhere on the college mound.

He won’t be in the minors very long.

Nola 2014
11–1 record with a 1.47 ERA, 27 walks, 134 strikeouts, and a .172 opponent batting average in 116+1/3 innings

Skenes 2023
9-1 1.72 ERa with 139 SO

If LSU makes it to Omaha Skenes will get a minimum of 6 more starts. He can break big Ben’s SO record.

He put up great numbers in the big bat era. Dudes hit bombs back in his day with those bats.
Youre thinking of the mid 90s. The late 80s weren’t as hitter friendly as you think.

Yes. When talking about who’s the best to come through, all of it matters. My point is people put Ben up on a pedestal and most of it was all done in a single year. It wasn’t sustained success like we see with Walker and Furniss and Crews and Nola. Look at the replies. 1988 had an aneurism and someone started talking about the bats. Juiced bats weren’t around back then. And Ben had one of the best seasons ever. Idk why people can’t be honest about things.

Nola was pretty close. Better off speed. But, less velo.

Up until this game Skenes could not get out of the 6th inning. Nola routinely went into the 8th. He never had Skanes’ potential, but he was a more effective college pitcher - until tonight.

I didn’t see the game, unfortunately, but I understand that Skenes was striking out batters with his offspeed, and he went into the 8th. If he can keep doing that I’ll concede. If not, I’ll take Nola as a collegian.

ETA: Nola had dead bats. I forgot about that.

The difference is Nola produced weak contact way more often simply because Skenes has way more swing and miss. They are two different pitchers and both extremely effective. Neither would be a bad pick.

Gausman gets overlooked in these conversations way too often. Dude was an absolute killer in college.

Wrong, Pete Incaviglia set the record with 48 homers in 85 for OK State and 5 of the top 10 Home Run hitters in college baseball played in the 80s including the top 2 single season and career leaders.

Love anecdotes.

Check team totals. LSU and opponents in the 87-89 seasons. You’re looking at 50-70 total. The same is across the country. The blow up didn’t happen till Easton took over the bat market. Ben wasn’t even facing the pop we’ve had the last 3 years.

ETA: not to mention them playing 75+ games.
