His back has gotten worse throughout the Spring. I know that he has been getting very little sleep and looks forward to when he can take his medicine to make it feel better. During the season Danny would get shots to help with his back to loosen it up which he wasn't able to get today.

He's tough as shite and doesn't want to miss learning the offense, but he has been laboring all spring. For example, He separated his shoulder during the Florida game and had his best game against Texas A&M. But having that severe of back pain is not conducive to playing a football game well.

Like I wish some reporter would have just asked Coach O why he hasn't told them he is getting surgery.I know for a fact Canada wanted him to get the surgery immediately and not practice during the spring, but Coach O told him "no we want you out there practicing."

Not to be a dick or anything, but why wait until nearly 1 AM on a Saturday night to 'break' this news?

So why didn't he go ahead and get the surgery vs waiting till now?

the reason why no reporter has asked this question is because you are literally the only one who has said this.

"Hey Coach O, I uhhh read on tigerdroppings that Danny Etling is having back surgery. Can you comment on that?"

I'm not a reporter so Im not really breaking any news. Im just an anonymous person sharing the information I know on a message board. You can take it or leave it to be true or not. Im just trying to calm people's nerves.

And personally I have my own thoughts on it. Like why wouldn't he get the surgery right after the season to have more time to heal. But I think the combination of a new o-coordinator and offense made that not a reality.

oh yeah not expecting them to ask based off my post. I just meant that like its a reporter's job to find out information and this is like something I'd expect them to find by just having sources.

Why can't he take his medicine now? I understand that he doesn't need to be nodding out on pain meds on the the bench but at least take his meds after practice so he can sleep.

I doubt this magically makes him better. He's been what he was today since high school. If this was that serious or it affected his play, he would have done this as soon as he found out. Can't see someone risking their health just so they don't let someone else take snaps. Wish him well with surgery though.

Etling having back surgery could have huge implications for him and the team this fall. Back surgery of any type is very serous and can result in a long rehab period, or longer than anticipated. And it wasn't like he was all that great to begin with.

That's a fact but he is the best that we had and he gave his best.

If Etiling is the best we have, it is going to be a very long season. Clearly he not the answer.

I don't know who it was on here, but someone mentioned this weeks ago. I was also asking myself why wait. But if it's minor and he can be ready for fall then he gets the offense and the surgery.

What would make him better is if the receivers get separation and he completes passes when they do. Another would be not to be predictable and pass protection. All fundamental play. The only other thing is whether he can run to keep the defense from keying on the backs only.

The coverage was excellent on most of the deep ball shots, but he doesn't have the arm to lead his receivers in those instances.

Waiting to have the surgery, assuming what you say is accurate, is a big mistake. Makes no sense.

While I don't understand waiting to have it either, his information is accurate. Look for a story coming this week.

Dude is tough as nails. He'll be back. If he is having surgery put him in your prayers for a quick recovery and wish him well. He played hard last season and is a great young man.

I don't care how tough he is.
Delaying surgery for the spring game is stupid, even if he feels like he is earning a starting position.
However, this is not as stupid as Da Coach O allowing the QB's to be live targets, PARITCULARLY with Etling's condition.

Not necessarily, it will likely be minimally invasive and very possible he could be throwing the ball in less than a month post surgery.
