Actually, Kelly is getting half. So, WE are really only paying in $3mm...a bargain!

No doubt. If you bring in 12 of the top 15 athletes in Louisiana every year (which is usually done by default) you start with a top 10 class. After that you can cherry pick form Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and other spots around the nation to round out a great class year after year. It doesn't always work out like that but in general it does.

Y’all refuse to give O credit for anything it’s not as easy as you make it sound.

Yep, that is why Curly Hallman and Mike Archer were such HUGE successes at LSU and sucked everywhere else they coached.

Too bad they were stolen from LSU so early in their tenures. Each one of them would have more NC's than Saban since they were at LSU.

That is kinda dumb. if we refuse to pay our head coaches money for winning, how are we ever going to attract anyone.

is Ed O over paid? yes. does anyone else want him? no. Now before the NC we were justified in not paying him, but once he won that we had to pay up.

He has a recent national championship and that team broke every record that matters in college football. Undefeated as well. And it was a wipe out with assistant coaches. Sounds to me like we’re back in the hunt again as well. Still not as much as Jimbo. Think about that.

Everyone knows no major football school would come for O. Therefore there's no need to give him huge raises or extensions when he's zero threat to leave.
What a great signal to send out.

What other currently active National Championship football coach would you be able to lure away from their program for less than $6 million?

And yes, the NC was spectacular and O gets credit for that. But I'm afraid that was less about O's masterful coaching and more about being a perfect storm of Burrow and Brady, both of whom are gone.

And Aranda.

The biggest surprise to me is that we pay him that much when no one else would even consider stealing him away for that much.

He got the bump up after 2019, going 15-0 with a natty, tons of awards and records for the team and players.

Remember, he was somewhere around $4 mil or so before then, which was still relatively low for a non-interim coach in the SEC. He was a definite bargain at the time (just for holding that job), and anything lower would have been perceived as damn near a rip-off.

You could talk about resume and track record etc, but being the HC at LSU is expected to have a payout. It's supposed to be a 'destination job'.

So no credit is given for having the guts to make some risky strategic decisions like bringing in a 3rd string, never saw the field, coming off an injury QB or an NFL, barely above gopher analyst to help re-write your offensive system. I think people forget how bold those moves were at the time. Those are the big decisions that the head guy makes and gets paid for, vs bring a glorified coordinator that got lucky in a big game with a 3rd string QB against an injury depleted defense in a playoff game and later cries on the sidelines.

I've already said many times that O gets credit for 2019. He brought in Burrow and Brady. That worked out well.

But I fear that it was luck, rather than evidence of sustained great coaching decisions and talent evaluation. O has pretty much whiffed on all his coordinator hires since he got here. Yes, Brady was a spectacular hire.

But it's just one hire, and the others were poor. And of course, after 2019, when LSU's appeal was at its highest, he replaced Aranda with Pelini. Unmitigated disaster. And replaced Brady with Linehan. Poor.

So yes, O gets credit for 2019, but that doesn't give him a pass for what happened before or after. It's just one data point.

Don't forget these bold moves;

hire an OC that runs an offense that he doesn't like, fire him after one year

hire a DC without even interviewing him
