re: How much of Wood’s no hitter had to do with the opponent?

I was baffled. I mean, they couldn't touch him but it was just a fastball. Most of the time they chase it up out of the zone but there was a bunch of movement to it.
That and he threw a ton of strikes

Did anyone no hit them before Wood?

They were the biggest fish in a small pond that got on a hot streak that came to a screeching halt in Omaha
Screeching halt? They lost on 1 big inning to UCLA, 6-4. And kept Arkansas close.
I'm not going to look it up for you, but they did beat Ole Miss 2x and GaTech once. I'm guessing those two teams have guys who can throw a fastball fast.

I mean, Murray State has been raking for much of the NCAA tournament
Credit to them but Ole Miss pitched off against them the first game, they only saw one inning of Hunter Elliott all regional in the final game in a relief appearance and he blanked them but they were already ahead. Then got Duke in the supers instead of UGA.
Not trying to take anything away from them, they made the most of the opportunities they were given and found themselves in Omaha. But on the road here they had never faced anything the likes of what they saw from Wood and it was clear they had no idea how to handle it once they had to go against it. Their at bats weren't even competitive.

He was perfect through 7. He still only faced the minimum 27 batters even after hitting one. That's hard to do no matter who you are playing.

That's the difference between SEC hitters. They would have caught up to that fastball the 2nd time through the order. In LSU's case they never had to catch up. Wood was still blowing Murray St hitters away with the fastball until the very last pitch. Absolutely had to do with the opponent
Yep, and Ben just said during Louisville/Oregon State game that the pitch was "fastball - middle". That's pretty sad tbh.
Only four 4 seeds have ever made it to Omaha.
2008 Fresno State - won it all
2012 Stony Brook (2&Q)
2023 Oral Roberts (1-2)
2025 Murray State (2&Q)

100% because of the opponent. I was at the game yesterday, sitting 9 rows from home plate by the MS on-deck circle. Those MS hitters just couldn't catch up. I doubt they have seen 98+mph pitching in many games and it was very obvious. Wood was pitching and throwing hard, but they were chasing the pitches. I even wondered if anyone charted how many times the MS players even made contact with any pitch.
The only batter that looked like he was able to keep up was the blond haired kid in the 9th who was out because they said he stuck out his elbow (which I don't think that he did). He was a PH, but still was timing the pitches after sitting on the bench for 8 innings.
I was really hoping Wood would get the perfect game. He did a great job, stayed under control and didn't walk anyone except the cheap HBP on the foot on a back foot breaking ball. He should have stuck with the FB on that 3rd strike.
Regardless of my comments, it was very impressive, in the CWS no less, and it was fun to watch. Congrats to Wood.

Murray had over 20 hits against Ole Miss in Oxford. They can hit

Was the reason that they came from inferior conference?
Then they beat the SEC and ACC to get here

I am just saying, could a better batting team have hit on him?
Yes. He gets credit, but with most decent teams it does not happen.

The same team that’s scored 27 runs in 3 games against ole Miss in Oxford, 28 runs against duke in 3 games, 4 against ucla in 1 game. The guys can score. Don’t take away from what Murray state has done in the post season and what gage wood did yesterday.

Omaha is a different park as Arkansas is demonstrating. They have 4 runs in 2 games.
Posted on 6/17/25 at 4:12 pm to Meldedee
Doesn't make a difference, he threw it. Murray St can hit the ball. Proven by the Duke series.
Posted on 6/17/25 at 4:22 pm to Meldedee
To be fair almost all no-hitters are due to the matchup. But him being on fire is also a requisite. Great pitcher.

another reason we are lucky to be in the SEC. We've seen this kind of pitching all year. When UCLA brought in their 'ace' today we smacked around his 96 MPH fastball. We've seen it before. A lot. Simple as that.

What if we have to play a third game against Arkansas?
