You're right. I can recall my dad saying he would never get used to anyone other than John Ferguson doing LSU play-by-play. We become accustomed to a voice.

Each announcer leaves his mark. I remember numerous games when John Ferguson was announcing with Walter Hill. When Jim steps down, he will leave his mark on LSU broadcasting history as well. I wish him the best.

If you heard John Ferguson Jim has always been a pale substitute. When you add his many errors on a game by game basis it is embarrassing for lsu to have such a hack. Good riddance and please let them get a quality play by play guy for the first time since John Ferguson!!!!1

I moreso think of Jim as having a different style. Ferguson was from a different era, and while it was definitely a good era in terms of announcers, entertainers, etc., that era is gone and will never return. It took a bit of getting used to Jim's emotions at times, as Ferguson was a bit more reserved. However, Jim served his purpose, and if he had really been that bad I seriously doubt that LSU would have hung on to him, much less allow him to retire.

Let's just thank the guy for his service and wish him well in his future endeavors whatever they may be.

Wont shed tears but it is always kind of sad when one era passes but will be looking forward to the new. Traveling around the country and listing to others will confirm (at least to me) he may not have been the very best but we could have done a lot worse. With all his shortcomings I personally think of him as being one of the best. Best wishes to him as he moves on in life.

Whats it to ya...The guy was a great announcer

yep, I remember the days when we had to rely on radio for many games, including football, baseball, and basketball....one thing about Hawthorne, he calls it like it is. If LSU sucked that day/night, he wasn't shy about saying it. You don't find that with some other announcers. Take Ole Miss, they are pathetic to have to listen to. They never commit penalties/fouls, etc....always the officials....lol

also, some of these young punks on here are just that.....punks. They know nothing of tradition. Hawthorne has given a lot to LSU over the years, and is much appreciated by most. These kids can't quite comprehend that.

I will leave the dicks to you TigerLee am sure have had plenty of Jim's. I was fortunate enough to hear Ferguson for several years and have lived all over the country and heard announcers all over who put Jim to shame.

Besides I know for a fact Jim has gotten plenty from LSU just by having the Athletic department cover his spank-o-vision charges at hotels on road trips!

Loved him and his recognizable LSU voice. I think he's been incredible. LSU fans will destroy the next guy, just like they complain about everything. Loved Hawthorne and will tune in for his last year.

Jim has a great voice and has had memorable calls. He's basically taken us thru all of LSU's National Championships in Baseball and Football (sans 1959).
That being said, he's become a little too opinionated the last few years. Sometimes, downright grumpy. Not interested in listening to awkward moments during the games.
Good man, great voice. Probably stayed about 3-5 years too long.

agreed. But, you will always have losers like rudy on a free site like this. Jim has made some errors later in his career...so what....I'm in my 40's....Jim is LSU sports on the radio to me....I enjoyed him, and I'll miss him calling the games. Jim brought more of a human element to his announcing that some of these paid cheerleaders that announce games.

you seem like a total piece of shite...no class at all....even if what you said is true (which I have zero reason to believe you) who gives a frick.......that you would post this says more about you, than it does about Jim.

The guy is LSU radio to a couple of generations. I'm sure the next guy will be very good as well. Jim was ours....he wasn't some radio guy up North....he had his own way.....and I enjoyed it. Again, what a piece of shite you are...and I mean that honestly.

Look Jim..err I mean Tiger Hollow just because you don't agree with someone doesn't make it not a fact. I am sorry I revealed some info about you ...........err your idol Jim. His pay per porn charges are well known just because you don't know about them doesn't make it untrue.

As far as ability Jim has made mistakes large and small all through his career not just the last few years. You say you are in ur forties have u blacked out ur Jim bad call memories. Listen to some other announcers across the country and u will see some talent that blows you ...err I mean Jim away. Too bad u didn't listen to any other announcers in the 80's many made Jim look like an amateur.

As for piece of shite...........look in the mirror Jim and go push your album

I grew up listening to John & Walter on the radio broadcasting football games in the '50s & '60s. I left La in the mid '60s and as a result have seen or heard very little of Jim's work. The majority of the posters here appear to be OK with his work. That and the fact that he lasted for 30+ years seems to tell me he did a good job. And I could give a shite less what he does in his personal time.
