History of LSU home jersey colours, for idiots:
Prior to 1958: no preference. LSU wore either white or purple; sometimes gold.
1958 to 1980: LSU wears traditional WHITE jerseys at home, no exceptions to the rule
1981-1982: LSU wears purple jerseys vs Rice (1981) and South Carolina (1982); all other games white jerseys.
1983-1994: Tigers, because of draconian NCAA mandate, wears purple jerseys exclusively at home
1995: White Jerseys only.
1996: White Jerseys all games except vs Vandy, because Rod Dowhower is a d*ck.
1997-1999: White Jerseys exclusively
2000-2015: White Jerseys for all games except one or two nonconference games in purple. The South Carolina game in 2015 (purples) was technically a road game.
2016: White Jerseys at home except for one nonconference game (purples) and a conference game vs Miss St ("old gold").
2017: White Jerseys at home for all games except vs. Troy (purples).

2018: Louisiana Tech and Rice games will probably be in purple

I wonder if the white pants will make another appearance. Troy game may have ruined them.

It wouldn't shock me if LSU shows up in purples for Miami, and Miami also wears a colour jersey (orange).

I don't think so, but IMHO the purple jersey/ gold pants & helmets are more striking, and aesthetically pleasing than purple shirts w/ white headgear and pants.

1953-that's fricking old. That's the year I was born, and 10 years before I started following the football team.
My first football game in Tiger Stadium was Oct. 5, 1963. LSU eked out a 7-6 triumph over a good Georgia Tech team. Billy Truax was a beast, and my favourite old-time player.

But doesn’t the visiting team have to agree on it? Thought that happened with Vandy in 95. We wore gold jerseys because they wouldn’t let us wear white and it was widely regarded as a dick move on their part.
ETA: and I think Oregon St. didn’t want to wear black in the Louisiana heat so we wore purple and they wore white.

LSU VANDY was 1996 when we wore goLD jerseys I was at that game.

Lol. It’s tough to remember some stuff that far back. I understand.

Sad thing is I was actually at that game too. Fans were told to wear white, but it rained and so everyone was wearing different colored ponchos.

That's still the policy regarding football jersey rules. The default is that the home teams wears its color jerseys, and if it chooses to wear white jerseys the visiting opponent must agree in writing to the change. That means for LSU, the admins must submit letters of intent to wear white jerseys to 5 or 6 of their home opponents each year, and receive notification of consent from the visiting schools prior to the start of the season.

It is my understanding that the SEC has a rule that member schools must agree to the request. It goes back to Steve Spurrier wanting to mess with our minds back in the late 90s. That's why for the Gainesville games in 98 & 2000, we wore gold and purple respectfully. It is also why Spurrier was intent on putting us in purple for the South Carolina game in Columbia in 2015 that ended up moving because of the hurricane.
So when MooState wants to put us in purple, we are not allowed to say "no".
ETA: Curley Hallman wanted to bring back the white jerseys for the centennial year of 1993, and they actually had letters from all our home opponents agreeing to it, but the NCAA still didn't budge. It was only when we enlisted GA Tech to join our petition in 1995 that the NCAA relaxed.

White jerseys have been the standard (preferred) raiment beginning with the 1995 season

Don't you know, ancient history doesn't matter to Rantards? Anything before the day of their birth is worthless.

Can you imagine the impact on LSU football if Curley's coup had succeeded? He might still be the coach of the Tigers, to this very day!

. I’ve seen them wear purple tops against SEC teams many years ago but

Tyrian purple (Greek, p??f??a, porphyra, Latin: purpura), also known as Tyrian red, Phoenician purple, royal purple, imperial purple or imperial dye, is a reddish-purple natural dye. It is a secretion produced by several species of predatory sea snails in the family Muricidae, rock snails originally known by the name Murex. In ancient times, extracting this dye involved tens of thousands of snails and substantial labor, and as a result, the dye was highly valued. The main chemical is 6,6'-dibromoindigo.
quote:
Tyrian purple may first have been used by the ancient Phoenicians as early as 1570 BC. The dye was greatly prized in antiquity because the colour did not easily fade, but instead became brighter with weathering and sunlight. Its significance is such that the name Phoenicia means 'land of purple.' It came in various shades, the most prized being that of "blackish clotted blood".
we are going to wear this historic dye AND WIN

LSU purple isn't the same as Tyrian, or royal, purple. It's officially the colour "aubergine", or eggplant (r,g,b values of 97,64,81 respectively). It's a dark, humble almost blackish purple and there's nothing "royal" about it.

It it is job of the follower, not the leader, to correctly apply "recognized" blueblood traditions.
The whites were initially intended to be a shaming device. After the 58 season, the whites were viewed very differently.
I don't knock the OP for for asking how long the white-jerseys have been a thing, lots of programs have locked pretty bush-league by jumping on white-out and black-out games. This was not some hipster driven fashion statement to get GameDay to show up in Tiger Stadium. On top asking about its age, I encourage you to consider what prompted it.

Who says Ga Tech ONLY has white tops? I remember seeing them in recent years in navy. I do know they prefer to wear white at home, just like us. Also, Nebraska used to wear white at home exclusively. We played them in a bowl game like 35 times in the 80's, and if I remember right, we had to wear purple against them.
