I think before 1958 the team alternated between gold and purple at home, and mostly wore white on the road. I've seen old photographs from that period, and my dad's yearbooks from the 40s. Unfortunately the pictures are all black-and-white so it's hard to gage the exact color value.

That was sort of the model of the 2009 uniform vs Arkansas, but yet we wore white jerseys/ pants. Still, they looked smashing.
