How long have the Tigers been wearing white tops home & away?

I know they wear purple once a year for a OOC home game. I’ve seen them wear purple tops against SEC teams many years ago but when did it become white tops home or away only?
Personally I love the purple tops just as much as the white tops.

Dinardo brought it back by petitioning NCAA in 1995.

Brought what back? Wearing purple or only wearing white?

LSU always wore white at home until 83 or 84 when ncaa mandated that all home teams must wear dark color jerseys and away teams must wear white. In 1995 Gerry DiNardo, I believe was on the rules committee, was able to help have the rule changed to having the home team choose the jersey colors as long as the away team approved. At some point since, the NCAA changed the rule and did away with away teams having to give their approval at all.

So if we’re playing at Auburn and they decide they want to wear their white jerseys, we’d have to wear purple?

White jerseys at home. Petitioned the NCAA to make that an option if visitor agreed.

I love the white tops at home but I wish the wore the purple more. The purple jersey with the gold helmet and pants is my favorite uniform combo that we wear

No

Well, we wouldn`t have to wear purple, but we couldn`t wear white if the home team wants to wear white. Its happened before, I think peach bowl against GT as they were designated home team and chose to wear their traditional whites.

Wearing white at home dates back to 1958 when Dietzel made the change. They went on to win the championship so wearing white at home became a tradition. That lasted until 1982 when the NCAA mandated all home teams wear their dark jersey.
DiNardo had the rule changed in 1995 to allow home teams to wear white if the visiting team approved. I know Vandy didn't let LSU wear white so they wore gold. I think Florida chose to wear white at home one year to prevent LSU from wearing white. There may have been others that I can't recall.
The SEC changed the rule in 2000 that didn't require approval from the visiting team. And now you know the rest of the story.

I believe this is correct...

Kentucky would wear white at home against LSU during the Fran Curci era of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. Moo State wore white at home against LSU in ‘78 and ‘07. Spurrier had Florida do it in ‘98 and ‘00. LSU wore gold in ‘98 but purple in ‘00, the first time LSU had worn purple since ‘94.
DiNardo had LSU wear gold if the Tigers were forced to wear non-white jersey in his tenure, and LSU chose to wear gold with white helmets and pants in the ‘97 Independence Bowl. DiNardo did put LSU in purple pants at Kentucky in ‘95.

Next question?
Now that Georgia Tech ONLY has white uniforms, what would happen if LSU and Georgia Tech were both selected to play in the same bowl game this year with LSU being the designated home team?

White jerseys have been the standard (preferred) raiment beginning with the 1958 season

I attended my first game in Tiger Stadium in 1949 - pretty sure they wore white at home even then. Here's the team photo of the 1953 squad:

In 1961 LSU played Ga. Tech in Atlanta with the game on national TV in B&W. Tech had light gold jerseys which showed white on B&W TV. LSU had to scrounge to get some dark jerseys in Atlanta before the game.

Technically it was the LSU PR Department that got the "Bring Back The Magic" White Jersey campaign.
I had the pleasure of cooking for DiNardo and spending several hours with him a year and a half ago and I asked him about this very thing.
I love the purple jerseys at home.
He said when he was giving his opening press conference after being named head coach at LSU he mentioned in 1971 Notre Dame came to Death Valley. He was a freshman so he did not make the trip...but when the team got back from Baton Rouge they mentioned how awesome it was.
He said they went on about how loud and electric Tiger Stadium was. That's when he said, "We need to bring back the magic of Tiger Stadium."
And that's when the PR people came up with Bringing Back the White Jersey's (The Magic).
But to answer the question...1995.
