How dominant was LSU’s defense? To the tune of a 31-3 LSU runs up the score!

With a defense this dominant, expect LSU to be competing in a bunch of close games in the SEC. Expect more alcoholic beverages to be consumed this season than normal, especially with LSU’s defense keeping it in every game! LSU’s football season suddenly got more exciting than many LSU fans expected.

Outside of the two OOC games left and Bama I think every game will be a close game. And I will talk myself into thinking Bama is a close game the Tigers can win by the time that game comes.

The defense made an incredible step forward in the game this weekend but I think people need to still be cautiously optimistic. Miss St had some drops and Rodgers missed on some throws, especially later in the game. You could definitely make the argument that he was feeling the pressure and rushing his throws (and the D should absolutely get credit for bringing that pressure) but better QBs may not be as affected by it. I still expect to see a couple of bad games from the defense going forward because not all of your problems will be solved in 3 weeks with a new coordinator.
I think no matter what though, the defense did more than enough to get the W last weekend and am glad to see House improving this D.

Not to get too far ahead of myself here but if Ed O’s 30 man crew of 3rd stringers and Texas can keep it close with Bama then there’s no reason that we shouldn’t be able to

Kelly said in an interview that Leach’s offensive is simple. He runs 4 plays that he switches up. Looked like LSU defense figured it out by halftime.

They played well but Mississippi State receivers dropped some easy balls that would have kept drives alive in the 2H.
They have improved every week, but tempered expectations here.

Rogers was completing 78% of his passes before the LSU game. House mixed looks and pressure to throw State's rhythm off and that had a lot to do with the drops and bad throws as you mentioned.
We are going to face tougher offenses, but at the same time we have a defense still learning House's system and a lot of players who have not played together before. We have a lot of DB transfers, Perkins is getting more reps and is a game changer and Baskerville is back. The D should only get better.

There were a lot of dropped balls by MSU to help the defense.

They shut down State’s running game which was really good coming into the game and they held Mississippi State to 200 yards less than their average. I don’t care how many dropped passes they had the defense played great.

I went into this season thinking it was going to be a lot like 2000...Saban's first year. There was a lot of optimism with a new HC, but not lofty expectations. With just about every SEC game that year you went into it thinking LSU had a chance, but there were no expectations of a definite win. Even though there were low points (UAB loss, blown out by Florida, not showing up vs. Arkansas), there were some great moments as well (upset of #11 Tennessee, great OT win vs. Mississippi State, first home win vs. Alabama in over 30 years)
For better or worse, we may see some of that this year (though I think LSU has more proven talent on this squad than the 2000 team). Who knows what state of mind Auburn will be in two weeks? Still, winning there is never easy. Tennessee probably isn't "there" yet, but they have the offensive firepower to pull away from LSU if the Tigers continue to have slow starts. Same for Ole Miss. Florida is a crapshoot, and in many ways the mirror image of LSU in the East (talented, but lots of questions). etc., etc.
It sounds strange to say...and I hope we get back to that point soon...but being a fan became somewhat "stale" when LSU was rolling off 9-10 win seasons each year. In those seasons fans circled maybe 2 games a year that might be "tough games". The rest LSU were EXPECTED to win...often by a lot. In that mindset a win brought very little joy, while a loss was cataclysmic. With the current mindset the games are a bit more "fun". When is the last time LSU fans were very excited about beating an unranked MSU team at home? But, because there was no expectation LSU couldn't lose that game, it made it, and winning, a fun experience.
I think soon LSU will get back to the power they were not very long ago. But for this year I'm going to enjoy going into the games with that sense of uncertainty and experiencing the joy of the team wining games they may not be EXPECTED to win.

Our defense turned up the pressure in several ways and State didn’t respond. That contributed to some of the mistakes we saw them make on offense. They hit and wrapped WRs without allowing YAC yards and they obviously rattled a normally very accurate Rogers with constant pressure from the 2nd quarter on. State’s offense is all about settling into a groove and our defense took them out of it and and kept them from ever getting back into one.
This was a huge improvement from the FSU game, where our defense always seemed to be on its heels and allowed them to dictate the pace. We were too passive and our players didn’t look completely comfortable in their rolls yet, especially in zone. Saturday was completely different. We were disguising coverages well and switching between man and zone to frustrate the QB. Our defense dictated the pace and flow of the game to State from the 2nd quarter on. Our guys look a lot more confident and comfortable with what they are doing now, and that will help them play more aggressive.
I also really appreciate the adjustments that have been made. I understand why Baskerville didn’t play much in game 1, but getting him and Perkins more involved has been huge. Also, swapping Ward and Brooks turned out to be a perfect move that has made both look better.
The guys on the Geaux247 podcast also pointed out a couple of interesting adjustments. They mentioned how House is using Sage Ryan to being pressure on the QB effectively in his reps, and that they’ve been moving Ali Gaye inside to spell Wingo a bit since Savion Jones is playing well at DE.
It’s great to see our defensive staff already finding some effective personnel adjustments to make this unit better and get the most out of what we have.

That is 100% the LSU defense affecting the QB

This, I felt like by the end of the game their QB was done…tired of being hit, rushing his throws, not going through his progressions…we hit him a ton

So a nail biter LSU game in the SEC doesn’t induce you to drink more? Where can the rest of us grow balls like this?

Give it up to House for the great game plan, and adjustments. The boys executed at a high level, across the whole field.
Does it mean dominant defense all season? Idk, there are certainly stronger teams ahead, but it is inspiring. Most of all, the heart the boys showed, and the physical conditioning.
I kept telling my wife, it's only a matter of time until the D is tired, and cant hold. Boy was I wrong!!! They had more gas in the tank than States offense, that's for sure!
