How does the OL know whether to run or pass block in this RPO scheme?

They run block every RPO. The challenge is to not go too up-field on their blocks so as to not get an illegal man downfield penalty called when we decide to pass.

What's distance on an illegal man downfield? Past 5 yards? 4?

Supposed to be like 3 yards but it’s not called many times. The key is the QB making quick decisions with the ball if he decides to pull it.

Passed 3 yards and you'll usually get a call but LSU's gotten away with a few linemen +5 yards so far this year so

The technique is to run block because the play called is a run play with an option to pass. The rule is 3 yards unless the ball is completed behind he line of scrimmage then it doesn’t matter.
It is the least called penalty in college football and has been for years. First touchdowns versus Georgia Southern and Florida one o lineman is 5-6 yards downfield every play. It has been the biggest gripe from coaches against Malzahn’s offense since he has been at Auburn

We should have been called for it twice against UF, they just never call it.
On Chase's TD catch on 1st scoring drive Lewis was way downfield blocking someone, about 4-5 yards from LOS.
On a Jefferson corner route from mid-field ish or so we had 2 guys like 5 yards downfield blocking too.

You know Saban will be prepping the refs to look for this penalty when we play bama.
I've seen it myself. Cushenberry seems like he is at least 4 yards down field locked up with an LB at least two times I remember.

Almost all of our RPOs last year were simply glorified play fakes. You could tell because the linemen went straight to pass blocking. Sometimes they didn't even get in a down stance. It was kind of stupid. Like the from under center playfakes we used to run on 3rd and 19 and shite.

BUT... until the NCAA instructs refs differently, which there has been no hints of yet, there some things to do/don't do to avoid getting called for it.
A) yeah, about 5yds is the limit
B) OL better be engaged in a block, no chasing anyone
C) OL has to keep back to QB, even a hint of 'presenting a target' and it will get called
D) if a D player is trying to disengage to get into coverage and you keep blocking they'll call it
E) stay in tackle box downfield
F) in any of circumstances above, and you block into an area that gets close to a pass route, they'll call it
ETA: I think this "balancing act" for the OL has been one of our issues with the run game. We weren't getting good 2nd level blocks because the OL seemed like they were trying to 'read' the defender to know what's going on behind them. Just get a hat on somebody and quit guessing. They have adjusted now and it is showing.

You are right but the problem is this is exactly what they are supposed to do. If he doesn’t get to the linebacker and you run the ball then the play is blown up. The lineman have no way of knowing what is happening so they are just supposed to blocks as if it’s a run every time. Until they start calling it consistently there is no point in changing what you have been doing.

And, they try to keep it in front of QB also on a RPO. If OL do get too far downfield, QB can see it and run to daylight/blocking. His eyes will already be on that daylight.
That's one of the reasons we're using the middle of the field much more. The checkdown/bailout route on a RPO is probably going to be between the hashes and we're going to put more receivers in the middle 1/3 on a RPO anyway.

Yeah I watched a breakdown of some plays and on a scoring play one of our lineman was 5 yards downfield but luckily like you said they rarely call it. Better believe against Bama those will get called though. Or maybe not? They may want it called fairly considering the media hype around LSU.

They run block, but usually are taught to go laterally and try not to get 3+ yards downfield
We had a guy pretty far down field on the first TD
(although i think it was 4-4.5 yards. We had the ball at the 9 and he was about at the 5, but not fully.)
