I wouldn’t say any of them have weak arms but you’re right none of them got drafted solely on arm strength.

His arm reminds me a lot of Drew Brees

Not a cannon but super accurate and strong enough to make the throws.

Also you can watch both of them zip a ball I to A right window when they need to.

I have heard it said more than once that you can't really teach accuracy. You can improve it some but for the most part a QB either has it or he doesn't.

The commentators were talking about Mariuci's analysis on Burrow and his quick decision making back during the playoffs. One thing that makes me feel better about Brennan is that you know he has gone through the same analysis and CEO/CSE have not wavered on Myles.

Lol @ Tua. He's got a body duct taped together and a little baby arm.

And people wonder why they threw so many quick slants.

Let expand on what you said.
quote:

Burrow's trigger time, i.e., his decision-making time is off the charts and when it is combined with his unreal accuracy, it puts him ahead of everyone else in the game, in my opinion.

Having a stronger arm without the excellent ability to make quick and accurate reads and without Joe Burrow's level of accuracy is more or less useless. Not to mention that throwing a super fastball is also much harder to catch for receivers.

Trigger+Release ft/sec
1Joe B 0.75 82.13
2Baker M 0.80 85.07
3Tua T 0.84 78.47
4Kyle M 0.90 83.60
5Haskins 0.97 82.13
6D Lock 1.00 85.07
6J Hebert 1.00 85.07
8J Love 1.16 86.53
9J Allen 1.20 92.40

Time it takes the football to go 20 and 40 yards in seconds
20 40
1J Allen 0.64 1.30
2J Love 0.69 1.39
3J Hebert 0.71 1.41
3D Lock 0.71 1.41
3B Mayfield 0.71 1.41
6K Murray 0.72 1.44
7J Burrow 0.73 1.46
7Haskins 0.73 1.46
9Tua T 0.76 1.53

Time to process+release+20 pass
1 J Burrow 1.48
2 B Mayfield 1.51
3 Tua T 1.60
4 K Murray 1.62
5 Haskins 1.70
6 J Hebert 1.71
6 D Lock 1.71
8 J Allen 1.84
9 J Love 1.85

Time to process+release+40 pass
1 J Burrow 2.21
1 B Mayfield 2.21
3 K Murray 2.34
4 Tua T 2.37
5 J Hebert 2.41
5 D Lock 2.41
7 Haskins 2.43
8 J Allen 2.50
9 J Love 2.55

Mahomes did not have a trigger time so I couldn't do a calculation.

When you add up all three which is what is actually going on during each play you see Joe is right up there as the best. You can't just focus on one metric as it does not tell the whole story of what it takes to make a completion during a play.

This is a function of vision - that most underrated ability in sport. Yes, practice and anticipation of the route need to be there, but decision-making is dependant on the speed of seeing what is open and when.

Not only does Burrow take less time to make a decision, when he does, it’s a BETTER decision.

You need to know coverages and who’s going to be coming open.

If you’re waiting for what you see you’re going to be too late.

Burrows arm is much stronger than Drew Brees arm has been over the last 2 or 3 years or so. Probably stronger than Brees arm ever was.

Great Article!

Myles Brennan’s velocity is nothing close to Mahomes or Love at 80+ yards longest throw, but he’s let them go exceeding 70 yards.

I’d love someone to do the exact numbers, but Myles is close to Justin Herbert in both Velocity and Release. Herbert threw a flat footed 62 yarder at NFL combine.

Myles trigger time is the unknown. His trigger time appears faster than Herbert, but that’s not a big deal because Herbert’s trigger time is too slow.

Anyone have SEC QB stats on these

I have always thought imo that trigger time (quick decision making) has always been to most important attribute to playing quarterback. It's what set brees, Montana, and brady apart from everyone else. Like great chess players or great hitters in baseball, they could process what was going to happen faster than anyone else. The lightening strikes of neurons in their brains are just milliseconds faster than normal people. Other qbs like Rodgers have quick release and arm strength that could make to for it somewhat, but not completely.

Josh Allen is literally one of the most physically gifted QBs to ever play the sport. Absolute rocket launcher and very athletic, strong, and tough with great size.

Think about that.

Really shows how important brains and accuracy are.

I'd be curious to see where Peyton Manning is on that list. He threw an ugly pass, no consistent tight spiral and I would guess average velocity. Manning was just smarter and more prepared than anyone on the field which led to his success.

No, no stats on that exactly. But here are a few interesting SEC passing stats:
SEC Long pass stats - (over 20 yards in the air)

Yards passing (minimum 800 yards+) - Burrow 1546...... [no other 800+ yds QBs]

TDs (minimum of more than 10) - Burrow 23...... [no other QBs more than 10]

Comp percentage over 50% (minimum of over 10 attempts) Burrow 56% on 73 attempts...... [no other QB 50%+ on over 10 attempts]

I did not mean 40 year old Drew

But I also feel Drew is a guy who's arm strength was underestimated.

People act like Drew Brees had a pool noodle for an arm his whole career. He's barely 6' and Still got drafted in the second round. he had to have something going for him.

My firm belief:

If Burrow threw the ball like many coaches demand (like Urban Meyer demands) - high velocity on almost every throw...

Then, no way in hell does Joe throw 76%, 60 TDs, and 5600 yards in the 2019-20 season.

Throwing hard is an inferior technique, Not a superior technique, IMO
