Glaring weakness LSU has to overcome to have a decent year

I think the biggest weakness on the entire team so far this year has been the linebacker play. If you go back and review this season, most of the big runs are right up the middle, and most of the time, they are barely even touched.
Yes, Perkins has talent, but he's not elite. I know that won't be a popular opinion, but elite linebackers impact games and he doesn't. He was outstanding his freshman year, but that was two years ago! Devin White is the perfect example of an elite linebacker. White made impactful plays sideline to sideline and in the backfield. Perkins doesn't excel in any one area and teams are taking advantage of that. He can't cover, can't read offenses and doesn't know when to attack and when to drop in coverage, and if he's in position, he doesn't know how to shed players and is easily washed out of the play. You can blame in on poor coaching, but great players still make plays and he just doesn't.
As for Penn, he's just not an SEC caliber LB and how he's started the last two years is beyond comprehension. I can't recall one play all season and last season where I heard Penn's name called. That's not good. As for Weeks, he's having a pretty good year, but he's so green that it's hard to assess just how good he really is.
The reality is Kelly has to find some type of temporary bandaid to get us through this year and then go out and grab a couple of elite LBs in the portal to sure up that position. In the meantime, we're about to jump into SEC play, so we need to buckle up because something tells me, it's going to be a bumpy ride! Also, don't look past South Alabama because they are averaging over 55 points in last two games!

Perkins never should have been moved inside.
Still unclear how much say he/family had in that decision.
But he should have been at Star instead of Burns. Play him there with a designed blitz package and he may have had a positive impact. But he was useless inside.

I think the glaring weakness is the fans who thought lsu would be a playoff caliber team with the amount of talent they lost from a season ago including a Heisman Trophy winning QB.

Linebacker and safety play. Burns and Ryan yesterday struggled mightily

We had the best linebacker haul in the country this past year.
Help is here; but it will be a minute. The cupboard was bare.
The guys we brought in are LSU standard from a recruiting standpoint and I believe we have defensive coaches to develop them. Problem is they won’t be on the field against OM in 3 weeks.

Agree; we had to scheme to have him do things as a middle linebacker typically doesn’t do.
May be downvoted; but defensive calls may be easier without scheming for ways to free/involve Perkins.

It’s hard to argue which group has been worse: linebackers or safeties.

He has been playing a weak side LB.

Perkins is not a safety.

I can see him in a situational package where he can rush the passer. Third down situations or against passing teams.
But he’s not our best pass rusher; nor does he tackle well. I don’t believe building our defense to suit his skills would be beneficial.

This especially. It’s been poor at lsu for years - lb and safety play. You assume in recruiting this should change in the next few years - but im not sure it’s a fix this season.

How much longer is Wes out ?

“He’s not a Safety “. He’s not a LB either. Might as well try him there. He can’t possibly make fewer plays than he has at LB.

Biggest weakness is red zone/short yardage offense.

Penn just can’t recognize how he is being blocked. I think some folks call it a FB IQ. MLB has to have the best instincts on the field combined with shedding block skills and strength. Can’t stop the run without someone who is going to bury a runner. Perkins gets hurt because he squatted, lost his legs, while hitting the ball carrier. He who hesitates is lost! And not sure why folks are giving Raymond a pass. CB can’t tackle….slip screens are killing us!

Overall tackling. The D is getting better at being in position but the YAC is killing them.

Burns and Ryan struggled last year as well. Its time to move on.

Whoever made that decision should be fired honestly and hopefully it was house.

Corners can’t/wont tackle

I agree it's close between those two groups, but IMO, I think the secondary has improved from last year. Of course, any progress is better than last year! In regards to the LBs, we have two returning starters and I haven't seen any improvement at all. It's frustrating to see opposing teams week-after-week exploit the middle of the defense with ease.
If we're truly honest, I think all of us can agree that had the South Carolina QB not gone down, we would loss by two touchdowns. The scary part is LSU still has games to play against two of the powerful offenses in Alabama and Ole Miss. To make matters worse, both teams have outstanding running QBs returning that absolutely shredded LSU defense last year!
