I was in my second year at LSU and I was at that game. Even after that game where we beat the hell out of them, the game the previous year, was still on most people's mind. The previous year Ole Miss beat us in Jackson and that one game caused LSU a natty plus Notre Dame decided to go bowling after several years of rejecting the invites that were offered to them. LSU got screwed big time that year but the Ole Miss and LSU rivalry definitely got heated up. Back in those days college football was fun to attend and the rivalries were definitely much stronger than they are today. Back then LSU usually opened their schedule with A&M, Baylor, and Rice. Those three schools were the doormats of the old SWC.

I remember throughout the 1960's LSU used to play Miami (Fla.) almost every year as an OOC opponent, both at home and on the road. They were pretty good back then as well, and blew us out 30-0 in Miami in 1968

The Rose Bowl had the Pac 8 and the Big 10, that's the only one that I knew of back then.
Didn’t the Southwest Conference have a tie to the Cotton Bowl?

I was a student but missed the game; went home to see a girl.

I watched part of the replay and heard the announcer say that LSU & Ole Miss had only had their game broadcast on TV 5 times & OM won all of them. Back then it was a big deal if your schools game was selected to be on TV.

Crazy story. I was searching for games from 69 and 70 so I could give to my dad when he retired. I called LSU and they said that they were in the process of restoring some old games and could not help me.

I contacted Notre Dame and they sent me the coaches film (one play after the other) and the radio broadcast for $90. I got to see my dad sack Joe Theisman twice, once for 5 yards and the other for 18 yards.

They sent it to me on DVDs. I have them in my safe deposit box. Just cool stuff.

Wow, football and Tiger Stadium were so different back then. To be honest, the crowd seemed louder and crazier back then. I heard one commentator say, "thats why they call it deaf valley, even though people are starting to call it death valley now." talk about nastalga

Ole Miss even waving rebel flags instead of that stupid arse shark or bear

This is the atmosphere I became accustomed to and it was still like that up until about 10 years ago when the LSUAD started pricing out many hard core LSU fans, in addition to the initiation of the Ultra PIM Crap!

They're fricking idiots on a grand scale trying to change the atmosphere in iconic Tiger Stadium! (Making it very easy for me, and many others, to walk away)

If someone did this today, they'd be mobbed, and the local AutoZone would be burned down.

I was at this game as a 13-year-old, with my family in our season tickets in U11 Row DD. My dad had purchased a small 5"x 5" black-and-white TV, I carried it in along with the battery pack. The crowd was at fever pitch at that game after Archie kicked our butts the previous two years. We left the game early, heard the roar from inside the stadium on Craig Burns last punt return for TD. Stopped for a minute, turned on the TV to watch the replay! It was a beautiful night to be in good old Tiger Stadium! Just two years later was the famous 17-16 victory, the "four missing seconds" game against the Rebs.

Would be great to see more complete old games like this, despite the graphics in the middle of the screen.

The SEC's official tie-in to the Sugar Bowl did not happen until 1975. The Sugar had traditional geographic affinity for the SEC before that, but nothing was official or required. While not many, there had been a few Sugar Bowls with no SEC teams at all. Up until 1975, like most bowls, the Sugar was free to look at the whole country and invite who they wanted.

Even though 1970 LSU went undefeated in the SEC and won the conference, they had two OOC losses to A&M and Notre Dame. The Sugar Bowl went with one loss Tennessee who had only lost to Auburn. Tennessee whipped a hapless Air Force team in the game. Had the official conference tie-in been in place, LSU would have gotten to whip Air Force in the Sugar instead, as the conference champion. Naturally that would have been preferrable to losing to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

Watching these old games the lack of athleticism compared to nowadays is very noticeable.

It's crazy that a QB with a full arm cast on the non throwing arm played, or was even allowed to play. Archie was at 60% at best. It just shows you how seriously OM took the LSU game, which is still the case today.

I watched it at my girlfriend's house and her family are huge Ole Miss fans. I loved every single second of that game.

I remember the BR Morning Advocate sports page headline “Aw,Shucks!” With a close up picture of a dejected Archie Manning.

Glorious.

I was on active duty with the USMC in Beaufort, SC and watched that game at a local beer joint with a buddy of mine from Crystal Springs, MS who was a big Manning fan. It was a wonderful evening.
