Can Kyren still be found guilty of the negligent homicide even though he's dead?

If he still can be found guilty would his family be held liable?

Wow. He must have really been messed up at the time, mentally. I'm glad no one else was physically injured due to his actions. His poor sister and family.

He had a history of doing dumb shite. Now people want to feel bad for him. He pulled a gun on his sister and stole her car bc he couldn’t drive his own and then cowered down and blew his brains out when cops approached. His lawyer has the nerve to cry prejudice in his ongoing case bc he dindu nuffin too. I have sympathy for his family but not him

No.

No.

Guilt is a criminal matter.

Liability is a civil matter. FYI.

It's hard to imagine that he put others in peril to take his own life. That's why I said he must have really been messed up mentally. He made it worse for others than it was already going to be. He had to have gone over the edge in the head.

I feel badly for his family.

That said, you trying to downplay his little "mistake" is disgusting.

Good post.

He certainly made mistakes and there were signs of immaturity, there's no doubt. You could see it on the field and we saw it very unfortunately off the field. It would not be a surprise to learn he had some mental problems, which is NOT an excuse for accountability.

But, at 24 and on the doorstep of a bright career, he seemed like a good kid by most accounts and had a lot to look forward to, which probably compounded his mistake because he knew what was ahead. His action was something that many kids his age are guilty of (speeding/reckless driving), it just turned out to be bad because it happened to cause the death of a man. And his judgment in the seconds afterward were wrong, regardless of his fear or immaturity or whatever. Inexcusable.

But it's also not evil. He didn't try to hurt anyone. His mistake happened to cause a death and he was unable to process the moment to do the right thing. That was going to cost him big time - more than most, and he certainly deserved the fate of the justice system.

I choose to not think of the kid as a bad person. If you call him ignorant or foolish or stupid etc then fine. Hopefully God gives us all grace in these split-second moments that can change the courses of lives. Many of us have had them, some have been more fortunate than others to not have to pay a huge price for their mistakes / worse moments.

why would he swerve into other traffic rather than the shoulder/off the road?

That road has zero shoulder. Veering off the road would have put them in someone else’s living room. As I said earlier, Lacy could have waited 60 more seconds and the road turns into a wide open double lane highway.

“Deputies were dispatched to the Willowbend apartments at 1960 and Townsen in reference to a male having a mental crisis and his sister arguing in the parking lot. A gunshot was heard from the brother then he stole her Dodge Charger. Deputies found the vehicle traveling on Aldine Westfield, and the driver fled. He crashed into a building near Lexington Woods after shooting himself. EMS and Fire Department were dispatched to the location. The male did not make it, and is confirmed to be a former LSU football player. Praying for his family (11:30pm)”

Lacy’s attorney’s statement
quote:

It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the tragic passing of Kyren Lacy. First and foremost, we ask that the public and the media give his family the space and time they need to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace. Kyren’s was scheduled to have his matter heard before a grand jury tomorrow wherein we were very confident the evidence, after being fully collected and reviewed, would lead to a declination of charges.

From the very beginning, this so-called investigation took on the appearance of an overzealous, targeted effort—what can only be described as a witch hunt—fueled by who Kyren was and the public profile he carried. The decision by the investigating agency to charge him at all, in our view, was not only unjustified, it was disturbing. It’s imperative to understand the Lafourche Parish District Attorney, to this day, has not formally charged Kyren.

Kyren was a young man with immense promise, and he was crushed under the weight of an irresponsible and prejudiced process. The negative barrage on social media, the circulation of his mugshot by nearly every news outlet rather than a standard photo, the recent civil lawsuit filed against him that named another defendant who mysteriously wasn’t charged with a crime, only him, and the overall tone of coverage painted a deeply biased picture before he ever had the chance to defend himself. There was never a presumption of innocence which was exemplified by the NFL pulling his draft card over mere accusations without affording him the slightest chance to defend himself. The pressure and perception likely became unbearable.

Let us be absolutely clear: This is far from over. We will be demanding a full and transparent review of how this investigation was conducted and why. Those responsible for this gross miscarriage of justice must and will be held accountable. In the meantime, we again urge everyone to respect the Lacy family’s privacy and allow them the dignity to mourn the loss of their beloved son.

I have a hard time reconciling intentional carelessness on the road that leads to a incident 3rd party dying and calling it a "mistake."

Totally agree. A "mistake" is looking at your phone for a brief moment, then rear ending somebody, or something similar.

Driving into oncoming traffic on a two lane highway to pass, and causing a deadly accident, then fleeing is criminality. Think about the mindset of somebody who would do such a thing. It would never cross the minds of even the more selfish and arrogant among us to commit such an act.

May God have mercy on Kyren's soul, and we pray for healing for his family, and friends. He was obviously a mentally ill individual who was dealing with some hideous demons. The entire saga makes my stomach turn. It's a disgusting situation.

Man! That was the best post!! As a safety manager I stress 4 seconds to choose! It can change your life forever! Kyren made bad choices in split second that has led to so many people being left hurt! I wish young people would stop and take a moment before making decisions! Take a breath before making a decision

As someone who battled suicidal thoughts for years, there is no way to relate to this unless you experience it. For me at least, it was an absolutely overpowering mental and even physiological experience. It was a crushing feeling, like the walls are closing in, there is no hope, and there is no other way out. Your mind can play tricks on you. I am a very logical and rational person, but those episodes would completely overwhelm rational thought. Luckily, I had the awareness to step outside of it and focus on my faith and family to work past the occurrences. It was almost like being in a nightmare but then you realize it while you are dreaming. You can’t change it at the time but have the awareness to navigate it. Everyone’s situation is different, but I wanted to add mine for context.

Thanks for sharing.
Judging by the downvotes in this thread, we have others that need to make big changes in their lives because of either arrogance, darkness, or are blind to their own sinful nature. Jesus said to Pilate “he would have no power unless it was given to him from above” We have arrogant people in this world that think they are stronger than the devil. Without God’s mercy, we would be crushed under the weight of this present darkness.
