Football: 77-0 in 1977. I was there!

Even though they were a postseason rival you had to always respect Rice for being a good program and the classy job that Wayne Graham did. It always bummed me how at the end of his career they sent Rice to LSU’s regional almost every season so instead of Rice going somewhere else and having a chance to advance they were basically eliminated on Selection Monday when they were paired with the LSU buzzsaw.

Southeastern and Rice in Baton Rouge in the late 2010's, lather, rinse, repeat

When I think of Rice v LSU, I first think of Lyn Rollins making cracks about how slowly Wayne Graham walked out to the mound.

Me too! Student section, Freshman year. Carlos Carson 5 catches, 5 TD’s, 201 yds. The David Woodley/Steve Emsminger era. Emsminger threw 4 of them.

Lance Berkman was on that 1995 team and would go on to have a very successful MLB career. But he wasn’t the only one in that lineup that was blasting home runs over the light poles in left field. Jose Cruz Jr who is the Rice Owls baseball coach now was also on that 1995 team

This thread brings back some memories. As a kid, I took a piss in the urinal next to Wayne Graham before that Saturday night heartbreaker we lost in 2005. He was nice talking to fans. The old Box didn’t have a separate bathroom for visiting players and coaches, so they had to mingle with us regular fans.
I miss Rice being a good baseball program. Their pitching staff, especially their starting rotation, was ridiculous on those 2002-04 teams. I will always have a ton of respect for Wayne Graham coming to Rice and building a strong program from nothing, mostly with local Houston-area players, too. A small, academically-focused school like Rice winning a national title is an amazing achievement. I hope Jose Cruz Jr. can build that program back up to a respectable level again.
As an aside, I wonder why we’ve stopped scheduling Southern Miss in the regular season. Seems like we played them almost every year during end of the Smoke years and early Mainieri years, but we haven’t scheduled them in about 10 years now. They’re a consistently good team only 3 hours away, so I’m surprised we haven’t at least played them in the midweek occasionally.

I miss being able to go to the bathroom and then make a sandwich while Wayne Graham visited the mound

I was at Rosenblatt for the 2008 CWS comeback, so that is my favorite. It was electric!!

I'd argue 05 is a worse regional loss than 95.
Yep. The different format in 95 makes it not quite as bad. We were the 2 in our regional (CSF was 1 and Rice 3).
But in 05 we were given an “easy” regional and a winnable super paring. We had already beaten Rice earlier in the year 8-2 and we should have cake walked to the Supers. That game really knocked us back down to reality.

2009 Supers. Felt bad that Anthony Rendon blew out his ankle.

I recall one of my early years of college, like 1987, Rice came in and Harvey Williams put on a clinic: 10 rushes, 196 yards.
