He needs to prove he can play a position. That simple. Will he, have no idea.
Well you are wrong so...

His measurables are pretty outstanding. Tall, strong, fast, plus power, etc. I know he has little experience in college in the field, but I'm sure that is an afterthought for the MLB clubs looking at his measurables.

And lose all leverage to sign a $20k signing bonus as a senior? Not likely. He can learn a position in the minor leagues.
while this is of course correct, the most important part of this is his NIL income for next year. that is the comparison that matters.
whatever he decides....God Bless him. Best of luck, young man.

No no no, a guy that has shown he can run like a deer needs to stand out in LF and catch 1-2 pop ups a game for 60 college games while stunting his hitting development and cratering his earning potential. He has to prove he can play corner outfield, because there are no examples of guys never playing the position but being athletic enough to handle it at a competent level with almost no lead time.
And there are definitely no examples in the major leagues this year.

The only way he comes back is if teams are leery of his injury history and that causes him to slide down passed the point where NIL could realistically be more than a signing bonus.

people drastically overestimate the NIL earnings of baseball players. Frey isn't Dylan Crews and even if he were it wouldn't be the NIL deal people think it would be. He's likely not even getting a 6 figure NIL deal staying at LSU. He will get far more for a signing bonus than he ever would in an NIL deal. Most NIL deals are enough to cover the cost of tuition with maybe a little pocket change left over to entice high school kids to take a chance at college to improve their signing bonus when they become draft eligible again. They're not enough to entice juniors in college to sacrifice their leverage.

Unless he doesn't care for the college experience, he would be best served coming back and earning a position.
One year as a DH isn't enough to assume MLB GMs are salivating. Some guys are leaving regardless of where they are drafted. I sincerely hope he is getting good advice.
He's been flying up draft boards, mocked in Top 4/5 rounds by a lot now. Which means a signing bonus north of half a million. If thats what happens (getting offers over half a mil), we probably cant compete with that.

He could make that up in NIL alone

He is moving up draft boards. He is gone I’m afraid. He will capitalize on his success.

Is the plan for him to take over for JJ at 1st??
With the lefty infielder that just committed from Kansas st, id assume he'd play 1st or DH

He's not going to make up what he'd be losing by not signing this year. he's looking at around half a million dollars this year based on current projections. He's making a fraction of that in NIL by staying, and then recouping a small portion of that losing his leverage next year. It would be a massive net negative to stay

NIL is not going to make up for millions of dollars lost on a signing bonus.

Unfortunate that the mlb doesnt have a system to help develop these kids

I know the kid is good enough, but I just don’t see how the kid gets drafted high when he had virtually no college experience at a defensive position. And he has leverage next year anyways

Cross your fingers and hope he stays.

In what way? Is he going to Japan? The Pioneer League? Who would be bidding against MLB for his services after next year?
