From the Twitter account of ESPN's Peter Burns.......

They said with Pete Maravich's shot chart, had he played with a 3 point line, Pistol Pete would have averaged 57 points a game. FIFTY-SEVEN

Someone can probably link it, but I think Dale Brown figured all that out

"Though Maravich played before freshmen were eligible for the varsity and before the 3-point shot was established, he loved gunning from long range."[14] It has been reported that former LSU coach Dale Brown charted every shot Maravich scored and concluded that if the three-pointers were counted, Maravich's average would have totaled 57 points per game.

Honest question. How would having been guarded by black athletes affected his average?

He played against black players. We aren't talking 40s or 50s.

With his competitive nature it would have made him better and he would have performed just as well.

Dude averaged 24 ppg in the NBA in the 70s. That is not bad at all.

Only white player in this picture, too.

Pete was the first white player the Harlem GLobetrotters offered a position to- I think they felt he was equal to any black player

Well the interesting thing to consider is that he would have had more of an incentive to shoot from that range so it could have been even more.

The counter to that argument is defenders may have guarded him more aggressively on the perimeter.

It was a matchup challenge, anyway. He was a 6'6" guard in an era with few 7 footers. There were 4s who ran 6'5" to 6'6" - even in the NBA, and there were still a few centers at 6'8".

So, you tell your 6'2" hotshot, best defender guard to go cover the Pistol more aggressively. I agree with the former sentiment - if the line had actually been there, Pete would have taken more from the outside and probably averaged 60.

He was in range in the parking lot.

Pete when he was with the N.O.jazz put up 68 points against Walt Frazier of the knicks. Walt(who was black) was on the all-defense NBA team ever year he played in the league 10 plus yrs.

In 1977, while playing with the Jazz, Pete scored a career high 68 points (without benefit of the 3 point line) against the Knicks. Guess who he was guarded by...Clyde Frazier considered one of the best defenders of his era. And by the way, Clyde Frazier is black. So get out of here with that nonsense that Pete couldn't have done it against black players.

Here's an honest question for you. Did you ever see Pistol Pete Maravich play? If so, you would not need to ask such a question. Simply the best offensive college basketball player to ever lace 'em up - IMHO. Was also a great NBA player until the injuries started to take their toll. He was a true wizard w the basketball in his hands.

I think they named a stadium after him immediately after he left without graduating - he was pretty good.
