ESPN: Matchups, not pecking order, got LSU

This appears to have just come out...Pretty much what we've been saying..

BATON ROUGE, La. -- There were angry LSU fans Sunday when word leaked out that the Tigers had dropped all the way to the Chick-fil-A Bowl to face Clemson on New Year’s Eve.
It’s an outrage, they said. How is an LSU team ranked No. 8 in the BCS rankings No. 6 in the SEC pecking order?
Fair question. The Chick-fil-A Bowl is tied to the No. 5 team out of the SEC, which, as usual, became No. 6 this year after two SEC teams qualified for BCS bowl game.
If you compared results among the six SEC teams with double-digit wins, it’s hard to rationalize LSU being the sixth choice among those teams.
There are two one-loss SEC teams -- No. 2 Alabama, which will play in the Discover BCS National Championship game, and No. 3 Florida, which will play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Both deserved their spots.
Of the teams with two losses or fewer, only Florida (3-1) and LSU (2-2) played four of them, with the Tigers going 2-0 against fellow two-loss teams.
LSU beat South Carolina and Texas A&M, two teams that were invited to bowls higher in the pecking order than the Chick-fil-A. A&M landed the much-coveted Cotton Bowl spot despite losing to LSU at College Station.
It would seem that would put LSU, which is also the second-highest ranked two-loss SEC team (behind Georgia, which suffered its second loss to Alabama in the SEC championship game) at the top of the pecking order.
But, the bowl invitation process is often a beauty contest based on who looks like it can put hind-ends in seats, bodies in hotel beds and eyes on the tube.
LSU seems to have lost those battles this year.
After Georgia played Alabama to the wire Saturday, coming within five yards of the BCS title game, it became a more attractive choice for the Capital One to play Nebraska. The game in Orlando has a long history of favoring Eastern Division teams.
When Oklahoma was knocked out of the BCS by Northern Illinois’ inclusion, the Sooners got the Big 12’s AT&T Cotton Bowl bid, making it easy for the Cotton to invite Texas A&M. If OU had gone, as many expected, to the Sugar Bowl, Texas would have landed in the Cotton.
LSU would have been the likely Cotton choice if Texas were the opponent since many thought the SEC didn’t want to see the Texas-Texas A&M matchup. But with Texas out of the Cotton Bowl, getting the home-state Aggies to Arlington made sense.
That left the Outback and Chick-fil-A next in the SEC pecking order with two 10-2 teams, LSU and South Carolina, remaining.
Because Clemson is tied to the Chick-fil-A as the ACC’s No. 2 team, it became unlikely that the bowl would want a rematch with South Carolina, which beat the Tigers in the regular-season finale.
So it made sense: South Carolina to Tampa to play Michigan and LSU to Atlanta.
It could be worse.
As for facing Clemson, it lost a little luster with a loss to South Carolina in its regular-season finale. But with Tajh Boyd, the Tigers have a passing game that can test LSU’s young secondary. It will also be the only game going New Year’s Eve.
It might take a while for LSU fans to warm up to it, but it’s a matchup Tigers fans will eventually embrace.

but what they don't mention is how Les refused to play Michigan in the Outback Bowl

So basically, the cap one and outback didnt take us because they knew we'd blow out the teams we'd be matched up against? Got it.

Again, especially under Mike Slive, I can't think of a situation in the last 4 yrs where the SEC had an opportunity to assist LSU and did so. Chik-Fil-A is a good bowl and Georgia Dome is a great venue. But the "screw you,LSU" attitude from the SEC wears on you after a while.

Ah, yes, matchups. What a no-story, boring game a Les Miles vs. Michigan would have been.

This. The chicken bowl would be easier to take if we'd received any consideration in the past.

And Slive is just a figurehead for the cabal that runs the league office. IIRC, Slive's retiring in 2014, but he'll be replace by another puppet and nothing will change.

I think this just might answer some of your questions...

Did the story mention how LSU is making the same 8-hour road trip for the 5th time in 15 years?
shite, if they're going to make us drive forever to get to a crappy bowl, why don't they just send us to Nashville for a change of scenery?

This has nothing do with the SEC, the bowls pick who they want to pick, and they didn't want LSU because there were better matchups to be made with other teams.
If you want to whine about anything, whine about the fact that the team let two winnable games slip out of their hands and played like garbage at the end of the year, leaving an unfavorable impression on bowl committees.

Why should we embrace a game against a weak disrespected team that has a chance to beat us because they have a great passing game and our secondary sucks? What element in any of that does anything to excite Tiger fans?? Seriously. I get that they will provide matchup problems for us but that's not something to look forward to as an LSU fan. Maybe more neutral fans will watch because it seems like a better game than the Orange, Rose and even Sugar but it doesn't mean its in the best interest of LSU.

Where have you been the last 30 hours??? The SEC definitely stepped in to "protect" UGA. They were plummeting to the Chick Fila Bowl, and LSU was set to go to the Cotton Bowl.

WHAT IN THE F..K???????
Last year we got screwed. The BCS says on its own website that "The reward for wins in the regular season is the bowl games." Thats how "they" justify not having a playoff. We all know what our "Reward" was last year.
Terms like:
Eyeball Test
Quality Loss
Two Best Teams
were last years f.ck job phrases.
This year its "Division Winner" and
"Beauty Contest"
IDGAF who says what. THIS is the type of shite that makes me appreciate no longer watching ESPN.

Or, the two most winningnest programs in college football who have never played. Who would want to see that?
When we lose head to head, they tell us its about head to head. When we win head to head, they tell us its about matchups. It's bullshite. It's about sending LSU to a lesser bowl every goddamn time.
The SEC treats us like crap.

What I see as a legitimate beef with the SEC is how they, by multiple reports, went to bat for UGA to get them into the Cap One, when really they didn't have to, as it serves not advantage. As such, the favor is never returned, to us, see 2005 as an example.
Everyone blames Bama for the scheduling, but it's them, Auburn, UT, and UGA. It's a consistant theme. I would be nice if the SEC stuck up for our interests more than it appears. I can't think of a single time they have.

Agreed. That's the problem--we were a one-loss team going into the SEC title game and lost to Georgia. SEC didn't pressure any other bowl to take LSU that year and we drop to the Peach. I don't care what any other poster says, it is clear the SEC plays favorites.

Why is the fact uga played a close game with bama even a factor?
As though LSU wasn't beating bama with just seconds left while also not giving up over 500 yards of offense
It's like they are saying they were expecting UGA to not hang with bama like LSU or a&m but they kept it closer than they expected thus they were so caught off guard that they were thinking "woooooah we gotta help uga"..."their resume isn't as good but they played so far above their
Heads against bama that it would be ashame not to reward such heart and effort"
