John McKeithen, probably Louisiana’s best governor, use to recruit football players for LSU. He recruited Charles Alexander personally.

quote:

McKeithen embraced Huey’s vision for LSU to dominate the college sporting world. McKeithen oversaw an LSU football program that whipped Bear Bryant two of the last three times they met at the close of his tenure in Baton Rouge.

Coach Charles McClendon accepted McKeithen’s obsession with LSU football. The governor was as consumed in beating Alabama as he was in building the Louisiana Superdome and landing a plethora of plants still operating along the Mississippi River. Football practices and road games became essential to his duties as chief executive.

When LSU endured a devastating opening night defeat at Tiger Stadium to Texas A&M in 1970, McKeithen reacted to the 20-18 upset by the Aggies by punching out a window in the governor’s limousine. His pugilistic instincts served him well when he earned a pair of Bronze Stars in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. They were less endearing to editorial writers a generation later who didn’t take losses by the Tigers quite as personally as Louisiana’s flamboyant governor did.

McKeithen’s dream to construct the Superdome arguably preserved the New Orleans downtown corridor, and the unlikely patron was a man from rural North Louisiana. McKeithen also acted as a catalyst for the construction of what is now the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Louisiana governors have meddled in LSU sports since the dawn of time. This isn't new. However Landry seems to be latching on to his "15 minutes of fame" and carrying it for all he can milk out of it.

Landry thinks he's Huey P (except for the chicken in every pot).

For his next tricks, Governor Farmer Fran will lead the GBFTL down the hill and replace Drum Major Catherine Mansfield for pre-game.

I have it on a good source that “if”McKeithen called Charles Alexander he said “Charles, can you he’p me?”

But I also have it on good authority that McKeithen served as governor until 1972 and Charles Alexander was a freshman at LSU in 1975. McKeithen was also a segregationist. Jerry Stovall recruited Charles who I think was only the third black LSU football player at the time. I doubt McKeithen recruited Charles Alexander.

I liked Mr Charlie. You do realize he was very instrumental in getting Dean to talk to Saban at the end of 1999.

Man did a lot for LSU and UNO . The only real meddling he did was back in 1994??? When he stepped in and made sure that Pat Sullivan was not hired as coach and made sure that a way was found to get DiNardo as coach.

His son had told me years later that his Dad, was pissed that the board had done that because in his mind Sullivan was a disaster waiting to happen.

You are correct. It was not Charles Alexander, it was Terry Robiskie. And it was Edwin Edwards who recruited him—who OP falsely claimed wasn't involved in the football program.

quote:

Robiskie was all-state in high school and one of the most sought after recruits in the nation, not just Louisiana. He received national interest from all the major powers and was considered a strong lean to Grambling, where several of his family had attended.

But he stuck with LSU due to the involvement of Governor Edwin Edwards, who barely had a passing interest in football. Getting the top recruit in Louisiana, a black man, to attend the state flagship university was hugely important to Louisiana and LSU.

Gov. John McKeithen was basically one of LSU’s chief recruiters while in office though.

quote:

The good news was, LSU had its most active benefactor in the Governor’s Mansion since the days of the Kingfish. John McKeithen was Louisiana’s governor from 1964 to 1972, and while he may have lacked the panache of Huey Long, he still took his job as LSU’s chief recruiter seriously.

He would chauffeur potential recruits around town in his white Cadillac. He had a hand in recruiting Bert Jones and Tommy Casanova. Hell, his daughter married wide receiver Andy Hamilton.

He was elected as a staunch segregationist, but he also saw the writing on the wall, and helped recruit Collis Temple as the first black LSU basketball player. He also funneled money to Ku Klux Klan to bribe them not to attack people. McKeithen was a complex dude.

All this pearl clutching is totally disconnected from LSU and Louisiana history.

Edit: Lora Hinton is who I actually thinking of with McKeithen:

quote:

So, McKeithen did what any other typical state governor would do. He picked up the phone and made the recruiting call directly to Hinton.

Longtime Louisiana sports journalist, Marty Mulé, who was also a columnist for Tiger Rag and a decorated Hall of Fame columnist for the Times-Picayune, characterized McKeithen’s phone call to Hinton in a story he wrote for the Baton Rouge Advocate about two years before he passed away in 2014 at the age of 73:

“A strange voice boomed through the interstate telephone line: ‘Lora, this is Gov. John J. McKeithen of Loos-i-ana. We have a fine school down here — and a good football team. Why don’t you come down and give us a visit?’”

We need Trump to get his arse back from Asia so he can pat Landry on the head and tell him "good boy" then Landry will shut the frick up.

That’s where Landry should have kept it, if he had to get involved.

So, you’re saying Landry’s antics here are simply the same thing as trying to help entice desired recruits or giving the political blessing on the much needed break of the color barrier of LSU sports?

Saban let Jimmy Sexton know he was interested in the job. He wanted out of Michigan State for lack of resources. Sexton and Sean Tuohy were business partners. Tuohy knew Joe Dean. They setup a secret meeting in Memphis at Sextons home between Saban, Sexton, Dean, and Cusimono. Dean reported back to Emmert that he could get Saban for $800K per year. He forced Deans hand to go to 1.2 million. They also agreed to build an athletic academic center and football operations building. Dean was a messenger nothing more during that e tire process.

It was more like Tuohy reached out to Cusimano and Cusimano contacted Dean....but in the end it really does not matter. I just don't like it when people complain that Mr Charlie meddled suggesting he routinely did, which was false. The only time he gummed up the works was when he convinced the Board to hold up ratifying the whole Sullivan hire.

I do know that he was not thrilled with Mike Archer when he and the Board signed off on the hire

Getting the boosters on board was entirely appropriate. Turning it into a political stunt pissed off everyone on all sides. It's a longstanding tradition for southern governors to meddle in football but most are smart enough to do it behind closed doors.
