Ed O and Craig recruiting friction/possible hires

When Matt Canada was hired in mid-December as LSU’s offensive coordinator, he made it clear to Ed Orgeron in his interview that he wanted to evaluate the offensive staff and make recommendations, including possible staff changes.
quote:
Craig’s strength has been more as a recruiter and Canada preferred to go with someone with a stronger feel for the offense he runs. Under Les Miles, recruiting ability ranked higher than on-field coaching — especially on offense. Since Orgeron became the permanent coach, I have been told there were some “personality frictions” between Orgeron and Craig over the recruitment of some members of this year’s signing class. From personal experience, this tends to occur when an assistant feels as if he is not on safe ground.
quote:
While Canada will vet a number of candidates, keep an eye on North Carolina State wide receiver coach George McDonald, 40. He has a background in Canada’s offense and is an outstanding recruiter. In his 16 years as an assistant, his stops include Northern Illinois, Stanford, Western Michigan, Minnesota, Miami, Arkansas, Syracuse and North Carolina State as well as the Cleveland Browns. All total, he has coached 17 college players who have gone on to play in the NFL.
quote:
Memphis wide receiver coach David Johnson is someone else to keep an eye on. He has experience coaching running backs at Tulane and was offensive coordinator at New Orleans St. Augustine.
Pickup McDonald for WR coach and Johnson as RB and call it a day...

David Johnson seems like a no brainer. Having connects at St. Aug seems pretty smart considering that school alone is a recruiting hotbed. Add his connects with all of NOLA and it is a home run.

Heard the story on tiger rag radio this afternoon. They made it sound like there were some very strong differences between coach O and Craig. They weren't sure what the disconnect was with juluke. What happened? Was coach O pissed about recruiting? Was Craig more focused on job searches and interviews than he was recruiting?

Seemed to me like Craig was very close to going to Oregon a couple of weeks ago... I believe O probably got pissed that it may have created uncertainty for recruits. If anything, I would have thought Craig was staying on staff

He definitely didn't seem happy yesterday, put on a smile, did a brief spiel at the bash, and got the hell out of dodge.

Apparently Juluke has had some family issues the past couple months that affected his job.

Yea I was thinking the same.

This has been the plan and I'd expect new hires in place rather quickly

Good I wasn't that impressed with the wrs progression this season and after the recruiting misses yesterday I won't miss Craig.

Didn't Craig have issues at Auburn with the coaching staff? Maybe he was the problem.

FWIW, Mike Detillier said on AFR today that the replacements have already been chosen by the coaching staff. He refused to comment on naming names but implied that both positions are already filled, and that he knew who the individuals are but didn't want to leak the names before contracts are signed and the school announced it.

Did he say when we can expect an announcement or he'll a leak!

Either that or Craig knew he would be let go and didn't want to lie to recruits? Really like this NCS WR coach! Excellent resume, 16 former NFL players at all those different spots?? WOW! He could legitimately say it's a product of my coaching not the system bc he coached in so many. Go get eim O, I have no doubt LSU will end up with better coaches and the players will soon all forget who was let go or how. It's business and if it betters the players/LSU then EVERYONE will not only understand in time but commend and thank coach O for looking out for their best interest, including LSUs. HTDTB

I knew this already also... These guys don't just fire people on a whim like some idiots suggest. They know well in advance who they are getting bf they let go of folks. Even in the Les situation, it was Jimbo, too much money, then it was Herman, played games, then it was O in the end I think LSU landed the right man FOR US. This will show in the coming years, the people that slandered this man should apologize because every move he has made really has paid dividends.
The man learned A LOT from some GREAT coaches and he's implementing their styles in his own way. You don't get the coaches we have on staff by being a no body or someone that isn't well respected around the country. These coaches could have went anywhere but obviously they know the plan and believe. If you say O is this dumb DL coach, well you're speaking for his entire staff that signed up as well. Morons

I hope O gets treated the same way if he is not successful.

I'd be going hard after the head coach at Neville. Build a fence around Monroe.

On the morning drive show, they alluded to a personality clash between he and Gus Malzahn at Auburn being the reason he left there. They also mentioned something else that I found very strange, if true. They said that in pictures they've seen of Craig during recruiting visits, he was never sporting LSU garb. Strange, but if true, that's unacceptable imo.
