he showed glimpses of this at LSU. He also had a huge hole in his bat on curveballs.
His bigger issue has actually been hitting fastballs. His whiff rate on fastballs went up to almost 30% last season from around 10% in 2024. He actually improved a lot hitting breaking balls
quote:
So what exactly does Crews need to get better at doing at the plate? Well, there are a few things. Before the season, Crews was known as a guy who hammered fastballs but struggled with spin. In his brief stint last year, Crews hit .299 against fastballs but just .098 against breaking balls.
This year he hit a poor, but less outrageous .180 against breaking balls, but his production against heaters dipped. Crews hit all 10 of his homers against fastballs, but only hit .220 against the pitch. His whiff rate on fastballs went from under 10% to over 25%.
He actually handled sinkers quite well, but 4-seamers gave him problems, especially at the top of the zone. Crews whiffed over 30% of the time against 4-seamers in 2025, compared to 9% in 2024. When watching him, Crews often looked uncomfortable in the box and his timing looked off. That led to him not being on time against fastballs. For Crews to succeed, he needs to be a great fastball hitter. That is what he has been his entire career and it is something he needs to get back to doing.

I thought he was gonna be better than Bregram

He's still in AAA and plays good defense. Even if the Nats give up on him he will get a second chance with another organization at a minimum

MLB is a fickle game. Who would think Austin Nola would have 6 MLB seasons, although his stats are moving way down now.

Around draft time, I mentioned to my brother-in-law that I thought he would struggle to hit in the MLB. He called me a fool. LOL

A little off topic but here’s a few guys I recently checked on for spring training:
Tre Morgan was struggling, had a .063 average but only had 15 or 16 at bats
Tommy White was on fire, batted like .430 in 35 at bats, 2 homers
Jake Fraley looking like he might get the right field position for the rays. He was at .400 with I think 30 PA and 21 at bats

It’s so surprising. He was so good in college.

To show how hard hitting is in the majors, these are the top 10 all-time LSU hitters in the majors using OPS as the stat.
(890 or more plate appearances)
1. Albert Belle .933
2. Alex Bregman .846
3. Brad Hawpe .845
4. Joe Adcock .822
5. Armando Rios .786
6. Todd Walker .783
7. DJ LeMahieu .759
8. Lyle Mouton .759
9. Alvin Dark .744
10. Aaron Hill .740
Other LSU players that were active in 2025 MLB career OPS:
Jake Fraley .735 in 1561 plate appearances.
Austin Nola .687 in 1237 plate appearances.
Josh Smith .680 in 1640 plate appearances.
Dylan Crews .634 in 454 plate appearances.
Hitting with wooden bats against major league pitching and defense is ridiculously difficult.

You’ve had some bad takes over the years…
And this is another one.

“Crews put up an awful .103/.206/.103 line in spring training this year, striking out in 11 of his 34 plate appearances, a 32.4% clip”

Hope it works out but saying he’s in AAA isn’t saying much. AAA a significant amount of time is for journeymen guys who aren’t good enough for the show. Guys good enough to get called up to fill in for guys on a DL stint etc but big time prospects typically spend little time in AAA.

He got a $9 million signing bonus. Let’s call it $5 million after taxes. Unless he’s a moron, I’m sure he’ll be OK.

Hopefully a scheme to get out of that shite organization.
You would be amazed at how much it matters who you bat in front of or behind. Makes a lot of difference what pitches you see. If there in a runner on when you come up you see different pitches than not. That is why great leadoff hitters are a gem.
Posted on 3/20/26 at 6:42 pm to Adam Banks
Relax! It's way too early to give up on him. You hit .425 in college, you are talented. He'll put it together.

I'm honestly shocked at how bad his bat has been in the majors. I never thought he'd struggle like he is.
Same here. He had a great LSU career. That said, I always thought UF’s Wyatt Langford was the better prospect as a hitter.
We’re all pulling for Dylan and he has time to be a solid major leaguer.
