Genuine question, who’s Washington?

ETA: Whoops, found my answer right after hitting submit. Shone Washington. Yeah, we need him to come in an immediately contribute.

Jones is not a dt, his body type won't let him get up to 300 plus

He does not have to be 300lbs in order to provide depth inside. Someone that can play in certain sets 10 - 15 plays a game is what will be needed.

Also playing an odd front could help combat some of the need for depth. If we are playing with a nose, 4i, 5, and a Jack then you don't need as many bodies.

Brian Kelly tricks Lance Heard and says that he will start him at left tackle if he pulls his name out of the portal. Lance agrees but it will turn out to be Kelly's Trojan horse as he will be referring to left defensive tackle!

Three out of four of Bakers top four DT’s at Missouri this year we’re under 290 lbs….in case that is an indicator of how he likes his DT’s. Some agility in the middle in a pass happy leaguenmay be valuable rather than starting big and subbing in pass situations.

Not sure if Shand would do well inside. He's fairly long and top heavy, need some dudes with tree trunks for legs.

Shand seems like the most obvious one to me

Jones I'd rather see lose 15-20 pounds and play DE still

More of an attacking 3-4 using our incoming 280 lbs. prospects in the rotation. I believe we will have 6 quality players at 280 or higher. Strength is DEs and LBs. Speed, attacking defense, not an immovable wall approach.

Caldwell should be a priority for this defensive staff, given the team’s depth challenges at DT.

Makes sense. It’s not like many teams on the schedule are gonna run it 40 times a game.

Agree. This is the answer, 3 down linemen. Guillory and Lee can run the nose, maybe Washington, and then use Jones, Shand, Washington, Carpenter, The 2 incoming freshman as DE's.

YOu have to use speed and chaos to disrupt the run lanes so you aren't subject to power runs right up the gut. I think we have 4 better LB's to play than 4 OLs. You have Penn, Weeks, Perkins and Swinson, plus Womack and Howard.

Hopefully some of the freshman LB's can give us some plays and show some thump and speed we lack at that position.

I know S. Jones was mentioned in another thread.

The staff wants Savion Jones to lose some weight this offseason to help his agility and quickness. So I very much doubt the staff is going to shift him inside to DT.

You really don’t. The Cowboys 3-4 was anchored for years by Jay Ratliff who was maybe 300 pounds. I’m sure he was abnormally strong, but you need hulking monsters for it necessarily.
