UCLA plays Hawai'i this weekend and LSU gets to watch it. My question is: does that help UCLA to have a "warm up" game against Hawai'i more than it hurts them that LSU will have some film before the game next weekend?

Would you rather play McNeese this Saturday before going to UCLA next weekend?

It's an advantage.

Hawaii plays hard. Hopefully they put up a good enough fight for chip Kelly to have to open up the play book. I think it benefits LSU a lot getting an updated look at UCLA’s personnel and formations. LSU will definitely get new ideas from this game.

It's an advantage in that you finally get to truly test your players against an opponent that's trying as hard as they can.

It's a disadvantage in that you could suffer some injuries, or things get so blown up plan/personnel wise you feel like you have to changes things up entirely for the following game against us.

Imagine if UCLA only beats Hawai'i like 24-21 or even lost the game, going into the LSU game they probably feel like they would need to reinvent themselves a bit in just a week.

I don't think it helps or hurt that much. I think it just helps everyone what to expect. You are either good, or not good. 1 week isn't going to change that.

I think its an advantage
but Hawaii will put up a fight and UCLA will have to show us things they dont want to.
regardless we have too much talent for UCLA to win unless we turn the ball over 3-4 times

The old adage is that a teams biggest improvement is usually between week 1 and week 2. Not sure if that is true, but I would guarantee you the coaches would rather a cupcake before playing a UCLA, or at least have it be the first game for both teams.

Of course it's a benefit to have played live reps in a real competitive setting. To what degree is it an advantage I don't know. But sure, it gives them a tune up against a weak opponent to self scout for the LSU game.

Obviously it helps UCLA work out the kinks and get full speed action under their belt.

Silver lining for LSU is that we get current film on them to study rather than make a best guess based of off last year's film.

Assuming no major injuries, it is an advantage. Intra-squad scrimmages are often scripted and can only tell you so much. A game against an opponent give the players/coaches an opportunity to see what may work, what doesn't. What their team does well and what they need to improve upon. Also, running a play in practice in a somewhat predictable setting is a lot different than running a play in a very unpredictable setting. It forces players/coaches to learn to adjust and compensate.

Now, just how BIG of an advantage it provides is debatable. Playing a game before your opponent alone doesn't overcome a big talent mis-match. Good teams are good teams. Bad teams are bad teams.

In recent memory LSU has been a part of two such scenarios:

2002 vs. Virginia Tech. VT blew out a bad Ark. St team a week before handling a decent LSU team pretty easily.

2017 - BYU. A bad BYU team struggled to beat a non D-1 team in Portland St. before playing a good, but not great LSU team. LSU dominated BYU 27-0. The same LSU team that would get blown out at MSU two weeks later.

Point being, playing a game is an advantage. But it doesn't overcome being a bad team.

Somewhat, mostly get to check on if plays work. Actual game time helps with anxiety of younger players first time in college football.

I would get the team together and watch the game live on Saturday. Then cover it with film thru out the week. Give them perspective. Totally different from watching live and watching game film.

They say teams always improve the most from week one to week two. On the flip side, we'll have film of them and they won't of us.

I feel like it definitely helps LSU just to get some film on them. We are breaking in two new young coordinators and this allows them to further scheme and create a game plan on both sides of the ball.

Yes, it is a definite advantage. Live game reps and all of the communication involved with getting the right players on the field, plays called, in game adjustments, etc... all extremely valuable.

LSU fans lost their shite when Virginia Tech scheduled a cupcake before our matchup with them in 2002 in Blacksburg.

I think the advantage outweighs the cons. UCLA will experience live fire. We’ve got a lot of new coaches working together for the first time.

The con for UCLA is we’ll have film. If UCLA can’t blow Hawaii out we’ll see some non-vanilla plays.

I think it helps the team playing the game before but probably only at the beginning of the game as they have an idea of game speed going in. By halftime I don’t think it matters.

This LSU team has enough experience that I don’t think it will matter at all.
