Best point on this thread.

the recruiting point is true, but only with regards to Mike LB and cover corners.

A&M has good depth at DL now and the OLB doesn't have depth but the starters will be serviceable.

A&M has likely out recruited LSU with DL the past 2 years.

If people aren't concerned than they are idiots. No matter what people want to say LSU's success over the last 6 years, except for 2013, were predicated on the Defense and Chief was responsible for that. Are there area's which could have been improved on while Chief was in charge? Absolutely, but the numbers don't lie we were an elite defense and that defense was led by Chief.

It is going to take a couple of years "hopefully longer" for him to get the players/personnel he wants on campus but after that watch out with their offense and just an above average defense and they will be a force in the west.

I like to believe the rest of the staff had a little something to do with it. You can't honestly believe Chavis was the sole reason for LSU's defensive success, can you?

Here you contradict yourself. If it takes a "couple of years" for Chavis to field a decent D, Sumlin will likely be gone by the time Chavis gets it going. Therefore, that potent (lol) offense will no longer be in play.

Chavis was elite with elite talent and average with average talent. 2009-10 was good but not great, and the same can be said for 2013-14 .

Here are LSU's 2012-13 NFL draft picks, broken down by player, round, and team.

DE Barkevious Mingo, first round, Cleveland
S Eric Reid, first round, San Francisco
CB Morris Claiborne, first round, Dallas
DT Michael Brockers, first round, St. Louis
LB Kevin Minter, second round, Arizona
DT Bennie Logan, third round, Philadelphia
S Brandon Taylor, third round, San Diego
DB Tyrann Mathieu, third round, Arizona
DE Sam Montgomery, third round, Houston
CB Tharold Simon, fifth round, Seattle
DE Lavar Edwards, fifth round, Tennessee

Without these guys in the lineup, our defense was pretty ho-hum as indicated by the stats I posted on the last page.

Well, I assume that Chavis was a big reason those guys decided to go to LSU in the first place. He and LSU put guys in the NFL every year. I don't think we can say Chavis was merely right place right time or inherited a bunch of talent.

Mingo, Claiborne, Mathieu, Reid, Simon, Edwards, Logan, and Taylor were LA guys, so I don't know that I buy that.

ETA: and most of them were members of the 2009 signing class, who signed their LOIs before Chavis coached one down for LSU.

Because we're now not landing big time defensive talent with Chavis gone amirite???

2009 was loaded with the defensive talent that made that 2011 team. Those guys signed before chavis coached. I'd say he had a hand in the success, along with others on the defensive staff. He just possibly couldn't be coaching all those guys at every position. He had help from haley and cooper/Raymond.

Chavis style of defense requires gap containing/space eating defensive tackles, d line depth and elite corners

THANK YOU! However, as much as this is utterly true, replace "Chavis style of defense" with "Top Notch SEC Defenses".

The Middle is the anchor. Interior Dlinemen and a Hardy Mike LB, and a hard-hitting cover safety are the basics of the SEC Defensive formula. Layer two is speedy DE's and 2 Shut down Corners.

The rest is obviously important as well, but these are the basics to build around. TAMU must get better talent and depth and soon, or it will not matter who is coaching their D.

A&M's defensive problems have not been schematic. They have been due to an inability to match up physically. Chavis won't have much impact on that unless Summlin is willing to make changes to A&M's practices to develop a more physical style of play.

How do you develop physical toughness as a defense if you do nothing but practice against offensive players who aren't as physical as your opponent? You get a false sense of your ability to field a competitive defense.

Also I believe in the SEC, you are only as good as your second d line. If you don't have a quality rotation, you're going to get gutted up front. A&M has laughable depth in their front 7.

RB - there backyard is Texas they will have a lot of elite defensive talent to go after. The bonus for LSU is that Chief was not thought of as an aggressive recruiter, but they will still be recruiting in a home state with a lot of talent to go after.
