Deteriorated? 2011 was 7 years removed from Saban, somehow demeaning what that team was isn’t fair to Les. Yeah he blew the Championship game because of his ego and love for JJ, had he won that game, that team would be the one compared to 2019, not some other school. It was incredible who they beat, and how badly they beat them.

We lost to two teams that finished the year 8-5....so had we beaten them as we should have - they would have both likely been 7-6 if that puts thing in perspective our good fortune in winning the title that year. A perfect storm of unlikely events had to occur and did.

Of course it's hard to say, but I'd tend to think we likely do. Good message board question.

How did this post get nothing but upvotes despite being blatantly wrong?

He had an undefeated regular season by Year 2 and a completely undefeated season with a national championship by year 3.

There is a difference in “Undefeated Season” and “Undefeated Regular Season”. He was 12-2 in his second season.

He was undefeated in his 3rd season (I would argue well into his Bama tenure), but that was not a common Saban occurrence (which was the point of the question in the OP).

Saban’s mastery is figuring out how to win championships.

Again talk to people inside the stadium. Yes 2011 was an amazing year. But that doesn’t make Miles better than Saban. And yes the accountability was way less when Saban left. I can give you specific examples. But talk to old players during that time. They will tell you the same.

Of course they do. They also win the NC in 06 and 11
definitely forgetting 12. Saban was the only thing standing between us and a championship that year. 15 probably doesn’t go off the rails without Saban knocking us tf out either

That 2006 team would have been nasty and was more talented than the 2007 team. That’s the more interesting hypothetical to make. How good is that 2006 LSU team with Saban as HC?

09 was one of the worst down years in SEC football.

Outside of Florida Bama everyone else was shite.

We finished ranked 17th in the country.
We were still recovering from kicking Ryan Perrilloux off the team and had lost our 3 top running backs to injury that season.
Ole Miss was the next best team, ranked 20th, and everyone else finished unranked. Everyone had 4 loses other than Bama and Florida.

Bama capitalized from the shittiest SEC schedule in the past 25 years.

This is where I lose it.

Saban, without doubt, is the greatest coach of all time. Period. Accountability and disciplinarian, not so much. In the past 20 years, who has he suspended or kicked off the team?

Richard Dickson talks almost every week about how much of a hardass Miles was on discipline compared to other teams when he played there.
No one kicks off Tyrann Mathieu for weed. No one other than Miles. MAYBE... Steve Spurrier.

Does 2007 LSU Go Undefeated with Saban?

The Kentucky and Arkansas games that year were just odd. We went up big in the Kentucky game and then just faltered down the stretch and didn't give the ball to Charles Scott when it looked like Hester was banged up and Scott had some momentum. Keiland Williams didn't touch the ball. I would think that game would have been managed differently and we win that game. Also, we struggled getting any sort of pass rush against Woodson.

Arkansas we were trailing in that game for a good bit and just couldn't stop their rushing attack between Felix, Hillis, and McFadden for the second straight season. Sabans defenses would not have struggled as much against the run like we did.

With that I still think we lose 1 game and go 13-1 but we wouldn't have had to have the events transpire to get into the Championship game. 06 was also a Championship team. He doesn't lose to Auburn. He wins the rematch against Florida.

Would have had a better game plan against Auburn with JR and his WR's instead of that conservative play calling crap Miles and Jimbo did.

You could say the same and probably more for Les if Saban didn't come back to college.
maybe I do agree Les probably has 2-3 titles if Nick never came back, but Les also had some pretty terrible losses that wouldn’t had happened under saban.

Saban saves us from about 7ish of Miles' bad losses during that tenure. Which could equate to 2-3 more nattys IMO.

I disagree, but I guess we’re just arguing semantics here. Your 3rd year is quite early in your coaching tenure. You won’t get fired after 3 years unless your performance is completely unacceptable.

Going undefeated and/or winning a championship in your third year is incredibly fast. Just look at Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, etc. and how long thy took a win a championship, Also, Kirby Smart took 6 years at Georgia to win a championship and Dabo took more than 5 years at Clemson. Ryan Day took 6 years at Ohio State.

It’s VERY unrealistic and unreasonable to expect a coach to go undefeated in year 1 or year 2.

If he had stayed, Colt McCoy would’ve been qb’ing that ‘09 lsu team and Perrilloux at Tx.

Saban never had an offense as good as our '07 until maybe '13 and subs.

As for STs, like it or not, Les's STs >> Saban's.

And as noted, Pelini and Saban had the same basic approach on D. Very similar styles. If anything, Pelini used this nifty safety blitz that wreaked havoc on Bama QBs.

How do you see a Saban coached '07 team doing better?

Some are either living in denial or have loss of memory.

Saban had some ugly losses here as well:
'00 UAB
'01 OM
'02 Arky
'03 UF
'04 Iowa, blowout at UGA

He was good for one stoopid game per year.
