Many people shitted on Greg Penn however his experience and ability to ahead blocks to stop the run def helped our defense. Which begs the question assuming weeks will be the off linebacker who will be the mike MLB? I know keys got a lot of experience at that spot but do yall think in year 2 he’s ready to be the QB of the defense ?

Yes.

He’s made plays everytime he’s gotten PT

Keys was a breath of fresh air last year. when you recruit at our level, this is the kind of freshman performance we need. the “that kid is gonna be good” kind. at first glance.

Very rarely other than some of the d line etc do you see someone become a stud later on.

He looked a bit undersized and not particularly fast (though he was in position to make plays more often than not). As others have said, Penn was not necessarily a great LB, so I think Keys can at least be to that level.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Weeks brothers as the starting LBs (at least initially) vs. Clemson. The only question will be which poster will create some Dukes of Hazard like meme with them in it.

He better be. It’s not like we have a stockpile of legit LBs

Lb room is actually full of talent our 25 lb class was ridiculous. However, it’s a very young room. Outside of west weeks, the rest of the lb room is underclassmen

Yea he seems to have good instincts which help make up for his lack of elite speed. Wouldn’t surprise me if they opt to go with west weeks due to his experience esp starting off at Clemson

He looked physical in the middle. I think he could be up to the task of taking Penn's place.

Yes. If there is one position that Baker can find and develop talent well, it's at LB. I trust his judgement and he had Keys backing up Penn and playing a fair bit by year-end.

Definitely, you had Mike LB learn the Sam/Star role and he held his own, then during the bowl game he played both Sam and Will (when they brought singleton on the field) the best line up for Baker 4-3 LBs is Perk at the Sam, Keys Mike and Whit Will. To have someone like Keys at the Mike is going to help the defense, he’s aggressive and seems to recognize the plays pretty quick

Whit, West, Keys, Perkins, Singleton (#12 LB).
New additions: Ross (#2 LB), Braker (#11), Moses and Zach Weeks

Penn was pretty underappreciated by the fanbase here. He spent 3 seasons starting for us and was solid each year, imagine being coached by House 2/3 seasons, we saw how bad House was with Omar Speights here and what could have been. He just lacked the flash plays a guy like Whit Weeks brings from the LB spot. He was rarely a total liability but his speed always limited him to some degree. Luckily he was a stabilizing force at LB for us even if again he didnt bring the flash plays pretty much ever. Rather him there than a Major Burns or Jardin Gilbert there.

Keys showed a lot of promise this year, excited to see what he bring to the table next season and also be a solid stabilizing force Penn was but maybe make a few more flash plays ala Perkins or Whit Weeks makes as well. The pick 6 was fun to watch in the bowl game even if it was more right place right time on the tip drill, still have to catch it and turn it up which he did.

Yeah this is a retarded take. Keys will be starting barring any training camp injury.

This 100%
When you saw him on the field for the first time, your like who is this kid. In the next breath saying this kid is going to be good/special.
Hoping we get the right rotation/combination with the Weeks brothers, Keys, and Perkins. And the other incoming freshman and year 2 guys on the roster make that jump. Our LB room is sick. DL should be much improved. Edge Rushers as well. We need an elite secondary Im so tired of this crappy defensive play when we are use to elite to very good defensive units. The last couple of years have been hard to watch.
