Legitimate concern.

They stand directly in front of the band in the stands. I'd imagine a significant amount of hearing damage/loss would be possible if they didn't have some sort of sound suppression.

Obligatory Pics.

Naw they don't have or need earplugs or anything. the have clarinets directly behind them so that's nothing.

Did not appear to. We sat 1 section across from them in front row and no obvious hearing protection.

Nah. They are far enoguh away from the "loud" parts of the band. They have 3 rows of woodwinds, 3-4 rows of guests, and 2 rows of colorguard behind them.

No concern for the colorguard right behind them, I see.

I fInally understand. The color guard's sole purpose is to protect the ears of the golden girls.

We used to sit directly in front of the GGs - it's loud, but I can't say it is dangerous.

What about the poor saps IN the band?

It's open air, unamplified sound. While the exposure is not insignificant, it is not nearly as bad as enclosed and amplified music, jet engines or heavy industry.

Was this an excuse to make a GG pic thread?

They're far away enough from the drumline to not have a problem. Hell, I'm DIRECTLY next to the cymbals and I only worry about not getting hit by one (which has happened ).

not originally, as you can tell by the first response.

Well, I'm on the other side of the stadium and I can hear the band loud and clear.

The GGs look like they could be getting the worst of the band's decible level.

If only there was a way we could measure this...
