All this don't hate Saban talk got me thinking----did you ever actually meet the man?
He got here my junior year and his last year was my final year of grad school. So I was a student the while time he was here.
During his final season in 04, I think before the Vandy game. A friend got me into the hotel/conference center or wherever where the team eats lunch before the game. I was out in the little courtyard area talking to some other fans when Saban came darting out and pushed someone's, must have been 7 year old son, and said "Get out of my way!"
The man is just an a-hole, period. He sucks at life. That is why I don't like him-not because he left or because he wins at Bama or some other reason. He is just not a good person.
Any other stories?

Once at the JW Marriott in Houston before the 2001 season at a preseason luncheon.
He's short!
Met Les a couple of times. He was eyeing after I asked a question at a Gridiron luncheon a few weeks ago. I asked if it was scheme or mistake when Hairston failed to kick the ball deep into the EZ.
He probably thought I was media, since the are not allowed there.

He showed up to vote in 2002, and people in line were asking about what happened against Auburn and he left without voting because he couldn't interact with people as a human being. It was pretty funny. He really is a world class a-hole, who if he wasn't good at coaching football, would not be able to function in the world.

Saw him on the golf course twice (CCLA) he was quiet and surprisingly short. Not rude or anything.

Ive met him at events.. The man knew how to work a room.. He knew the importance of getting the fans involved. He would make sure to introduce himself, sign any autographs and take pictures to anyone who asked. Usually with a smile and courteous nature.. When he was scheduled to arrive, he would be there exactly on time...not early or late..When his scheduled time was up.. he took off... He viewed everything within the prism of his job.
I do remember things changing a little after he won the National Championship.. The pressure and obligations became a visual chore.

Saban was lucky he was born in the 1950s or he would have never played football at a D1A school.
No room for 5'7" white DBs who can't run.

So... Saban's an a-hole and Miles is a nice guy. I'd rather have championships. From everything I have ever read of Saban (be it contact with him from fans or sports professionals), he is the consummate professional and does everything he can to achieve excellence. I think Miles is a good guy but he doesn't seem to care about his job or excellence like Saban does. If given the choice, I would much rather take Saban over Miles any day.

I was behind him once in traffic. He rolled right through a blinking red light

Passed him near the athletic building one day on my way from the parking lot and just said "Good luck against [whatever team that week] coach" He just replied "Thanks" which was nice enough. I never expected him to stop and come over and chat.
Side note, I ran into Emmert when I was on vacation and said hello and that I went to LSU and thought he was a great chancellor. He actually stopped and talked for a few minutes about what I thought about my LSU experience which was pretty cool.

quote:You definitely have the choice. $12 and a trip to Wal-Mart will make Saban "your" coach. I say go for it.

Then you need to read more. Just this year the "consummate professional" was anything but with the media when it was exposed how his program was paying players. He's petulant with a local media that enables it. Everyone knows this, and it isn't news. The guy is a great football coach that wins. He is not particularly professional, he yells at coaches, players and staff, and he's not a particularly nice or good person outside of the facility. People feel the need to view winners as good people or professionals. That's a narrative that hack sportswriters have created that critical thinking people should reject.
His petulance, his relentlessness, his vindictiveness, his single-mindedness, and the chip on his shoulder make him excellent. They also make just about everyone dislike him.

I used to see him at church every Sunday
He'd leave right after communion so he didn't have to talk to anyone

Ive met him in a couple of settings where the general public didn't have access to him (dinners, events, etc.) Hes not quite as assholish as some people's random run ins with him, but hes a very socially awkward person. Looks at the floor a lot, short answers to questions, etc. I know first hand that the board of supervisors made him take public speaking classes on a weekly basis because his media interviews were so bad when he first started.

I have a friend that had to go to his home to provide a professional service. It required that Tiny Dancer answer questions. He was advised that he was NEVER to ask The Diminutive Dicktator any questions not specifically germane to the service he was providing.. Never under any circumstances make small talk with The Lying Lilliputian. He did not, and The Angry Screamer was curt and professional in every respect.

he walked by me once when I was going to a 730 class. He said hello and smiled. Nothing interesting or unusual, but he wasn't some satanic dick either.

I met him at the airport and drove him around twice when he flew in to my area on recruiting trips. He was nice enough, but you could tell it was forced. I don't fault him for that, I'm not a people person either. One time I was around him for about ten minutes. The second time for about an hour-he stayed on the phone with writer from SI the whole time.
Contrast with Miles, who I've also met, and who is very, very personable, and interested in a lot of things besides football. He was asking about the area's industry, recreation, all kinds of stuff.
