His scholarship would be done if he's in the transfer portal at the end of that semester.
If that's true and he's still at LSU, then obviously he must be paying his own way. So again, LSU isn't "helping" him get eligible to transfer.

The school has the option to withdraw a scholarship once someone hits the portal. I dont think we have with Smith yet because there's really no reason to considering our scholarship count. Especially helps as an enticement to get him back.
If he wasnt on scholarship right now he'd probably be at a JUCO than paying his own way.

If he stays, he's a Tiger.
If he goes, well he's nothing but Tiger Bait...

Who knows with that dude
Brody Miller said Deion is in school at LSU but he doesn’t expect him on the team next season
Ole Miss fans are saying he’ll be at LSU for the Spring then transfer
...and none of that came from actually came from Deion.
It's all just skepticism.

One key point of the Transportal... you have to be in good academic standing to transfer. Maybe he is sharpening his gpa this spring. And maybe just decided to stay. I have no info on his status.

This element of the rumor doesn’t make sense. Why would LSU help a guy get eligible to play for a rival?
You can't kick a guy out of school because he might go to another school. As long as he's fulfilling the obligations of his scholarship, there's really nothing that can be done. Sure, they could pull his scholarship but then it's not a question as to whether he leaves or stays. If the LSU staff wants him, they'll be trying to get him to stay during this time.

He’s enrolled as a student at LSU, you can kick someone off the team but you can’t kick them out of school on the athletic side. Which is a good thing. He has every right to continue his education wherever he wants ON HIS OWN frickING DIME.
FIFY
No school is bound to keep a kid on scholarship once they enter the portal. While there is no reason to kick him out of school, if he’s still on the fence or planning to transfer, there’s no way he should have a free ride and access to our facilities.
I hope he stays, but my gut tells me this isn’t settled by a long shot.

“Help” is relative. He has a scholarship. Pretty sure LSU can’t just void it because he was considering a transfer.
I’m pretty sure players are renouncing their scholarships when they officially enter the portal. The school you leave is under no obligation to keep you on scholarship after that, even if you want to go back.

The school can, without penalty, remove you from the team upon entering the portal. By being removed from the team the financial agreement is voided and they won't get a scholarship for the next term.
The school CAN choose to keep them on the team until they enroll elsewhere keeping them on financial aid (e.g. Arik Gilbert) and having access to training facility, training table, housing, etc.
However, three summary points:
A) the only choice the player has in this equation is to quit school, thereby becoming academically ineligible by not fulfilling hour requirements.
B) There is not automatic scholarship result, renounced or not. It is a binary choice, but a choice nonetheless.
C) It is up to the school. The player doesn't really get the choice in regards to what happens to his schollie.

Ole Miss is paying his shite while he gets his grades straight. This isn’t a secret. So he stays at LSU and gets his grades straight, then transfers.

It sounds like a secret if it’s true because I’ve never heard that.

Right, no proof at all yet that Ole Miss is paying for Smith to remain in school to straighten out his grades.
So we can all just continue to go back and forth and post our views on this until we hear something official.

I personally think if a player enters the portal he should be off the team and lose access to facilities & perks.
But realistically, and what I want isn't realistic, it should be on a case by case basis based on whether we feel they will return back to us from the portal.
Unfortunately there are plenty like Gilbert and I presume Smith who are going to take advantage and use the fact we want to keep them and are training for another school.

100% true.
Also 100% true: Don't let him use the fuking team facilities unless he's playing for or graduated from LSU. That's what bothers me the most. This guy wants out but they're still letting him use the facilities? That makes zero sense.

If we sign Burton, frick Deion Smith
If we don’t sign Burton, Deion Smith will be back!

Seems like the opposite is true, he’s with the team but has a lot of work to do to be eligible. Ball is in his court.

He gave notice that he is in portal. It takes virtually no effort for Smith to say, he’e reconsidered, and wants to remain a Tiger. He hasn’t despite all the wishful thinking on here.
AT BEST, he’s half way out the door keeping all options open.
As of the time he went into the portal, he’s no longer a Tiger.
Great talent, would like him back, but there is no real loyalty here for his teammates or LSU.

As long as he's a scholarship athlete they can't stop him from using them. Again, if they don't let him use the facilities the chances of him staying drops to near zero percent.

Yes. Central Michigan I believe. Granted it's not SEC caliber but the dude could flat out get up for catches.
