Anyone who says Raymond started DBU is new to LSU football.

Well some of that comes with the teams success and some of it is due to teams not playing a lot of 5DB defenses up until the late 90s. Teams weren’t drafting nickel corners back then, they were taking from the top 1 or 2 guys on a team. Someone like Ron Brooks probably never gets looked at if he played behind James and Walker for example, the amount of players invited to the combine has more than doubled since then.

Cooper was 2009-2011. PP7 was awesome but one player doesn't make a school DBU. The prolific periods was undeniably under Raymond (2012-2021) Patrick Peterson (2011 5th overall, 138 starts, 3x All-Pro) Tyrann Mathieu (2013 third round, 89 starts, 2x All-Pro) Jamal Adams (2017 6th overall, 46 starts, All-Pro) Tre'Davious White (2017 first round, 47 starts, All-Pro) Morris Claiborne (2012 6th overall, 74 starts) Eric Reid (2013 first round, 98 starts) Donte Jackson (2018 second round, 26 starts) Jalen Collins (2015 second round, 8 starts) Jalen Mills (2016 seventh round, 34 starts) Greedy Williams (2019 second round, 12 starts) Delvin Breaux (2012 undrafted, 22 starts) Ron Brooks (2012 fourth round, 8 starts) Rashard Robinson (2016 fourth round, 15 starts) Brandon Taylor (2012 third round, 1 start) Chad Jones (2010 third round) Danny McCray (2010 undrafted, 10 starts) Tharold Simon (2013 fifth round, 5 starts) Kevin Toliver (2018 undrafted, 2 starts) Chris Hawkins (2010 undrafted) Craig Loston (2014 undrafted) Roland Martin (2015 undrafted)
Half of those guys you mentioned never played for Raymond.

BOOM!!!! Great response.. CWeb was actually recruited as an Athelete and played WR his first season then Saban saw something in him and converted him to DB...not without some squabbling from CWeb...and helped him to become an All-American. He was originally a WingT QB that played DB on younger level FB. He's a great person and is still involved in the community where he grew up!!

I was thinking about the last ones he recruited. It still blows my mind how bad we were at pass defense in 2020. You had Stingley and Flott both very good NFL starters at corner and nickel. Ricks is getting a lot of playing time at the other corner and was a freshman All American. Then you had back ups like Ward and Dwight who was drafted or will be drafted by the NFL. Bo Pelleni had to be the worst hire in our history to have us playing that bad.

Chris Williams, Willie Teal, James Britt and Marcus Quinn. This was probably the best ever.

It's true.

Now, as a school with a storied defensive history (which is undeniable, even if we don't have the "championships" - bought, cajoled or otherwise - of other more *ahem* "favored programs), ever since specialization, LSU has had bursts of greatness in the secondary.

From the late 60s surge (Sammy Grezaffi, White Graves, Maurice Leblanc), through the 70s (Casanova, Hodgins, Mike Williams, Burrell, Green, Teal) the 80s (Chris Williams <-still the career interception leader at LSU, McDaniel, Britt, Daniel, Dale, Hobley, , Jefferson, Jackson, Mayes), even the 90s (Rodney Young, Tory James, Denard Walker) it was rare for LSU to go more than 3 or 4 draft cycles without at least 1 DB going in the draft.

There were none between Mark Roman (2000) and Norman LeJeune (2003), but it should be noted that Ryan Clark went undrafted during that period.

2005 is a potential year to start the "DBU" as that was Corey Webster and Travis Daniel the same draft, skipped 2006, then the rush was on:

2007 - Landry
2008 - Chevis and Steltz
2009 - Curt Taylor
2010 - Chad Jones

Others have covered 2011 onward.

Now, in addition to Clark (UFA 2002), other undrafted DBs of note:

1983 - Jesse Myles
1994 - Anthony Marshall
2004 - Randall Gay, Adrian Mayes
2005 - Fred Booker (Marcus Randall )
2006 - Jack Hunt, Ronnie Prude
2011 - Chris Hawkins
2014 - Poppa Loston
2015 - Delvin Breaux, Ronald Martin
2018 - Kevin Toliver

*Out of order for a reason
1992 - Corey Raymond ( )

I've been reading this argument for over a month on this board. If Raymond wants to shut down these arguments then deliver the goods on both recruiting and what is seen on the field. Your move Corey.

PP7, Corey Webster, and a couple others actually started DBU. They had shirts made that said DBU on the front and Brotherhood on the back

Ron Cooper is the one who had multiple DB’s in the heisman talks. We’ve had good DBs pretty consistently until after 2019. Ron Cooper made us “DBU”, imo because of the national spotlight that Peterson and Matthieu brought. That opened people eyes and caused non-LSU fans to look more into our great defensive backs before them and obviously after them. Raymond did a good job of extending that run.

These past few years have been especially bad for most of us that have never known LSU to not have studs in the defensive backfield.

Our weak spots, most of my life, have always been linebackers. We’ve always had a good DL/DBs.

It’s wild for anyone to think DBU wasn’t started with Nick Saban as HC, Muschamp as DC, & Kirby Smart as DB coach.

And Saban's Defense didn't finally "Gel" until he moved #83 Devery Henderson, ( ) I mean Jack Hunt, from WR to Safety to make all the on-field Defensive calls. (Defensive QB)

Saban knew what he had to do and it started "Clicking" as soon as Hunt was moved.

'03 was a better secondary than '10 from an actually performance standpoint. '10 probably had the most talent ever, but wasn't quite "there yet" because a lotta guys were young (Reid, Tharold, Tyrann) and weren't quite starters yet.

Tyrann was a starter and was very impactful for most the season. Tharold saw playing time increase as the season progressed obviously but You are underrating the '10 season. Mo and Pat Pete were lockdown especially later in the season. Tyrann actually replaced Mo in the opening game because Mo was struggling in his first game action but by the end of the season that group was elite.

bullshite. All those great DBs were recruited by other members of the coaching staff

What about the ones HE RECRUITED WHEN HE WAS HERE?

Ron Cooper recruited and/or coached all these players while at LSU from 2009-2011. That 2011 DB backfield may have been tGOAT 8/12 on the roster played in the NFL with most at a high level. Truly DBU by the numbers started with that 2008 recruiting class. Don’t forget that some stayed for 4 years not 3 like Pat Peterson.
Eugene
Loston -2011
Brandon Taylor 2011
Francois
Pat Peterson
Ron Brooks 2011
Mo Claiborne 2011
Eric Reid 2011
TM7 2011
Tharold Simon 2011
Dexter Alexander
Martin 2011
Jalen Collins
And he recruited
Jalen Mills

the name kind popped
up during the 2010-2013 time period

but if you want to know who established LSU reputation as an elite producer of DBs.

Well he’s short and retired.
