He came in when we had some truly remarkably bad QBs and was good. He gets overlooked because Burrow was right after him but he was a damn good football player.
Or hear me out, LSU had so many horrible QBs before that some people think Etling was a good QB.

I figured you would get downvoted a ton, but you are 100% right.

OSU should have been the opponent
No they shouldn't have. Losing to a bad Iowa State team, regardless of the circumstances they had to play under, was a scarlet letter that couldn't be erased. Either LSU or Bama would have annihilated that team. If they had beat ISU, yes they would have rightfully gotten in, and yes I think LSU would have beat them soundly in the NC game. But, I don't deal in Alternate outcomes.

Fixed it for you.
Since we're talking alternate outcomes here, let's examine another possibility. Etling was extremely limited in his capabilities as QB. I really believe he was a baller, but just not that good. That was shown earlier in the season v Syracuse and TROY when he absolutely reeked, and freshman Brennan came in for a spell and got the Tigers on the right track. I really think Brennan should have started every game after that TROY fiasco.

Did you miss the part where Brennan came into the game and looked horrible?

Well then you’re a fricking idiot

Danny Etling would have thrived in a "Brady Offense".
He always got ragged on because he didn't have a very strong arm but if he could have played with 3-5 receivers on the field consistently, he would have easily been a 3.5-4k passer.

I didn't miss it. He came in with LSU in desperation mode with the game already well in hand for Bama, so it's not a fair argument. And besides if he had been playing each game to that point he would have been improving, not still a raw novice.

Brennan weighed about 145 pounds in 2017. He wouldn’t have made it through the season. Hell he only made it through 3 games in 2020 when he was bulked up and stronger.

But even as a skinny freshman QB back in 2017 Brennan was the best passer on that team. He showed lots of ability in the few games he played before Bama, and the fact he came in with just a few minutes remaining in a desperate situation shouldn't lessen his overall rating.

Etling was tough as nails and though he might not of had the most talent, dude played with heart every play.

I would also add herb tyler to that list

Etling is the only LSU QB I can think of who was handed the starting job because the existing starter was literally booed off the field (Brandon Harris in the Jax State game).

Huh? He threw two picks in that game and was (rightfully) benched for Jefferson.
I will always maintain that Lee was set up for failure in that game. The two interceptions were both thrown at Alabama's all American safety and cornerback. I thought at the time those plays were called to set Lee up. In retrospect, maybe Les was that stupid.

You only needed to look at his happy, undisciplined feet when the pocket was caving in on him for your answer. He set himself up for his own failure against the stout defenses, which is a shame because he was a cerebral QB with a high ceiling early on in his career.
