Both Etling and Lee are underrated even as they were average. Etling put up decent numbers even as he was limited by both the scheme and his arm. Lee was better arm wise but was too skittish under pressure. Neither could be counted on to win the game.

Which is what made Burrow Burrow.

DE was tough as nails and fought every damn play. The AU game we lost, could have single handily been one of LSU’s all time greatest plays at the end.

He made us stable when we needed it, and always bleed purple and gold.

People forget how badly the OL got raped that game. JJ had hands on him before he could drop back.

If Lee were in there with his stone feet, he might have legitimately been killed. . .or at least thrown 16 INTs
The problem with Alabama vs Les Miles was that the LSU team had way too many tells on offense. Alabama knew what plays we were running before we ran them.

on back to back throws, iirc
If JL gets to ba a game manager handing the ball off 60% of the time instead of throwing on 66% of the plays, he would have been more successful. We had capable running backs, we didn't need a running QB.

bama get in over them

The truth is Bama was a MUCH better team than Okie St that year. Bama would have blown out Okie St or Iowa St in head-to-head competition, on whatever field they played.

None of this in any way excuses LSU's woeful effort on 1/9/12. If Jefferson wasn't the answer, and Jarrett was in Miles' doghouse, then why wasn't Mett even considered as an option? He had played mop-up duty in a couple of purple-jersey games that year and looked really good. He could have mixed things up in that championship game.

Isn’t DE still on an nfl roster with the seahawks? Maybe He wasn’t the problem…

Posters like to down Etling because he couldn’t throw a football the length of the field.

Idk, he was the worst QB since JL’s freshman year. Honestly, we should have just ran the wildcat instead of having him play qb because he wasn’t a threat throwing it or running it. I’m not sure why this board is so infatuated with him, I guess because he did have grit and would get yolked running into the teeth of SEC defenses.
Do you not remember the QB he replaced? Or the guy before that?

Yeah I remember a lot of Etling bashing at 1st but my eyes said he was better than most of our recent past at QB. I think he was also close to putting it all together.

He was an OK QB that looked amazing because we compared him to a lot of Bad QBs.

He played within him limits. He didn’t make a lot of throws he didn’t think he could complete.

Jefferson’s interception / tackle in the title game reminded me of the Waterboy dishing the football off to someone just so he could hit them.

If the discussion is "most under appreciated" then the answer is Jamarcus Russell. Unlike Etling or Lee, he was actually very good but we have donkey brained fans who say he was bad.

It would have been interesting to see Etling run Orgeron's wide open offense.
He may have made us a Contender.

JR is. People assume he sucked because of his NFL career but the guy was a #1 pick for a reason and the most gifted QB we ever had.

He was the definition of a game manager and that’a not a slight against him. He was very smart with the ball and actually had underrated mobility when he needed to run. He was also one tough son of a bitch which was his best trait. He took some absolute shots and got up every time. I remember the game they busted his mouth open I forgot who we were playing that day but he didn’t miss a series. In a time where we had some comically bad QB play he was a breath of fresh air and was the guy that started LSU’s string of good QB play.

This guy clearly did not watch Etling play against Notre Dame. A truly terrible quarterback

Etling fricking sucked. The best thing you can say about him is that he didn’t turn it over a ton. He wouldn’t have started for most other SEC schools
