He’s literally the best pitcher on the team, I would imagine a starting role is in his future.

Why? You don’t like having a 5 inning closer to shut the door? You piece a win together however you can

But would our own just blow that one game he pitches if he starts? We need to see others develop before we can really do much. We have not seen that shores than can lock down out of the pen as only his fastball has control but has minimal movement. You not going to be able to finish games with just Evans.

I felt Eyanson was showing some growth last week and Johnson was too quick on the hook while screwing him with the shifts. We need Guidry back and he shows he can at least handle a one inning closer role strongly since he has limited pitches. Benge has shown flashes. Schmidt needs to get his curve for strikes. Got had the best curve from the right side in the draft and now can’t throw it for a strike. Getting his curve for a strike alone would make him a great pen piece. Just fastball for strikes is going to keep him getting shelled. I am hoping Rizy can develop. I don’t have a ton of high hopes for others as of now.

. He’s the perfect eraser to come in when a starter is struggling a bit and chew through innings

That’s fine and all, but you can’t keep doing this in game 1 of the series.
If you’re going to use him that way, which I’m good with, then it needs to be in game 2 or 3.

If he has to keep rescuing your ace, then maybe he should just be the ace.

If you make him the starter move him to Friday. He will get you 7 only have to use the pen for 2 innings.
Anderson to game 2 eyanson to game 3
Shores can move to middle reliever

He needs to keep doing exactly what he did tonight

It was the right call to bring him tonight, but now they are hurting the rest of the series unless Eyanson and Shores start pitching better and giving them more innings. If Anderson struggles, then having Cowan to work the backend makes sense. Otherwise, Cowan in the bullpen is a luxury they can’t afford unless and until they find 1 or 2 other reliable starters.

STFU and let the coaches that do this for a living make the decision.

I’ll keep saying it… I’d rather Cowan for 7 innings per weekend than 4.

I think if Shores struggles again you have to give Cowan a look

You have to use what you have to win game one. With Cowan unavailable, because he is being held for game 3, do we win game one against State?

If Anderson goes seven, and we have a four run lead, then pitch the middle of the bullpen to finish game one. Then if Eyanson and Evans get you to a similar point in game two hold Cowan for game 3. But I’d still start Shores. See what he gets you, but don’t let the game get out of hand. Even if Shores goes six innings Cowan would get a nice three inning workout.

Benge gets the win
Cowan the save

Cowan should have got both

His ability to come in relief and throw 3-4IP is more valuable than being a starter right now. They can dictate the situation(coming in with a lead) and it has a larger effect on the game.

The flip side is if you do move him, you create a hole on the backend. There really isn't a reason to move him unless an injury pops up.

I get your point but Shotes would be able to fill a hole in the pen. He seems like a better fit there anyway. Cowan extended a lot at Wofford. He could easily get you 6-7 innings per start.

Game 1 of this series would have been a good time to get him in the rotation as it’s obvious Anderson struggled with the short rest.

Either way, I’m happy we have Cowan and debating on starting him vs long relief if a good problem to have someone so versatile as him

He definitely can be a starter.

Of course last night was an example of why you'd lose something if you did that. We almost certainly lose without him in the pen.

No you give Schmidt the ball on Sunday if Shores continues to struggle

Have you literally not watched Schmidt at all over the last few weeks? Dude has had 3 rough outings in a row. The question for him is not can he start on the weekend, its can he even give you 1-2 quality weekend innings at this point.
