I'd have to agree with you on that.

This!

Baton Rouge is the freaking state capital. The definition of a "college town" is a town that's primary industry is the college. This is not true about Baton Rouge.

basically any town that revolves almost completely around the school is going to be a better "college town." BR really isn't really what I think of when I say "college town." It's more of a "city with a big school in it," sort of like Columbia, Lexington, Tallahasse, etc.

best "college" towns:

athens
austin
oxford

I would say boston, but I might as well say new orleans. neither are "college towns" but have tons of colleges.

some people just cannot grasp basic concepts.

In terms of town support for the team, several of the small college towns in the Big 10 are probably more united than many of those in the SEC. BR is a city unto itself, with/without LSU. A place like Iowa City is virtually ruled by the University of Iowa. I know. I was born there and left as fast as I could crawl. What the university wants, it gets - anywhere in Iowa City. It's the same in places like Ann Arbor and, to some degree, Columbus. I like BR like it is. There's enough of a town personality that can stand on its own.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "college town."

Austin
Boulder
Boise
Eugene
Athens
Nashville
Madison

I mean, I could go on.

their stadium looks like trash, ours looks cool, and their stadium is right next to the "hood"... our campus is way better then theirs....
are you on drugs or just blind? Bryant-Denny is a much nicer venue than Tiger Stadium. It's sad how much cleaner it is. Walk up the ramps on the inside and looks how unappealing Tiger Stadiun is. Some of the bathrooms have anthills in them.
The only thing that was better about Tiger Stadium this year was the field was better.
How can you knock Bama for being next to the "hood" when you risk getting mugged if you walk outside the north gates to get a bite to eat?

As I look at other college towns, I would like to know the ones that people think are better than BR.

Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham...the beating heart of 'tobacco road'.
Athens...very, very nice.
Columbia, SC...rolling hills surrounded by lakes, two hours to myrtle beach.
Austin...hill country, lakes, great music scene.
Charlottesville, VA...beautiful horse country an hour from the Shenandoah Valley and an easy ride to the Outer Banks of NC.
don't know where the uof Hawaii is...but it's got to be better than BR.

any city north of Tampa is way too cold, with cloudy, nasty weather.

/thread.

This. If the entire town doesn't shut down during Christmas break and for much of the summer, and the people not affiliated with the University are not called "townies", it's not a college town.

Salmanca, Spain...then Nashville or Austin. Charlottesville should be somewhere in that mix too, but it just isn't as fun. Great college, great town, just really low-key compared to the other three that I mention.

But NOLA has nothing...absolutely nothing...on Salamanca.

Salamanca

On Salamanca:

"Salamanca is known both for its monumental sights and the University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1218 and is the oldest university in Spain and the fifth oldest western university. With its 30,000 students, the university is, together with tourism, the economic engine of the city."

"Many people continue to come from all parts of Spain to study at the University, and the students represent a significant percentage of the city's population (the University has 36000 students, approximately). The support of the student population is one of the most important economic activities in the city. These young people (also consisting of international students studying the Spanish language) provide Salamanca with a highly active night life, specially when school is in session on both weekdays and weekends. This has led Salamanca to be in the top list of cities with the highest bar per inhabitant ratios in Europe, second to Bilbao."

"A traditional Salmantinian celebration is the Lunes de Aguas, "Water Monday", the Monday after the Sunday following Easter. Originally this served to celebrate the official allowance of the authorities for the prostitutes to return to the city after Lent and Easter."

IMO, Baton Rouge hardly qualifies as a college town. It's a mid-size city that happens to have several colleges on it.
