College towns to me are towns where when school out of session, the town disappears into nothingness.

I much enjoyed Blacksburg (Va Tech). It's very clean and has good amount of college things to do right around campus.

Malibu, CA - Pepperdine

Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB

San Luis Obispo, CA - Cal Poly

Berkley, CA - Cal

Palo Alto, CA - Stanford

are all pretty great "college towns" and that is just w/in the state of California.

In my opinion, the home of the Banana Slugs, UC Santa Cruz does not hold a candle to the beauty of any of the aforementioned locales. It is essentially a series of rustic high school looking buildings hidden in a forest.

All that being said, Baton Rouge, LA is a pretty damned great college town because LSU is located there.

Baton Rouge is the freaking state capital. The definition of a "college town" is a town that's primary industry is the college. This is not true about Baton Rouge.

Then we better quit mentioning Austin.

I see your Salamanca and raise you an Oxford and a Bologna.

Oxford-gorgeous city with a great pub and restaurant scene (Cambridge is also nice but much smaller)
Bologna-the center of the Italian culinary universe and home to one of the oldest universities in Europe.

I've been to Salamanca. It's a beautiful city as well but the Spanish are anti-American pricks.

True, but we have different ideas going on here. Based on the definition some have given, Austin does not qualify at all.

However, those that propose that definition are simply defining it how they choose and it is not right or wrong.

I tend to look at BR, Austin, Talahassee and the like as college towns while I say no to Houston, Atlanta, etc. I am not right or wrong. Just my thoughts on it.

Austin

Boulder

BC - I love Boston......

There are undoubtedly a few more that I know nothing about.

Bama is NOT better than LSU. When I was recruited by Bama, the very first reaction was. "man, LSU is way better than this." Yes, I did attend LSU ultimately, but at that time actually leaned to Bama due to family members playing for the Tide.
