re: College football that we grew up loving is gone

quote:That's a cop out, IMO. Coaches are often the single most high profile representative of the university. Having them just jump ship - literally for more money - is, to me, a worse look than a penniless kid wanting to improve his chances of receiving playing time somewhere. The average student athlete has WAY less flexibility in advancing their livelihoods than the coaches do. The players also aren't asked just to demonstrate loyalty to the university - they are also asked to completely buy in to the coach...and the coaches obviously do often just leave on a whim.
If you don’t think its important that the athletes are student-athletes and that they are representing the university that is educating them, then I’m not going to argue with you. I believe it’s critical to the greatness of college football.
I don’t think the same of coaches, because they’ve already gotten their education and are in their careers.

That's why I wasn't joking in threads where I said LSU 2019 pre-Covid year, before Asterisk yr Bama, was the last legit NCAAF Champ..
It's over now, this is full tilt minor league pro football.
The rah rah alma mater draping will only cover a bit longer for the aloof to awaken.
NIL + Instant Transfer Portal = Drama Queens, Locker Room Cancers, Early Opt-Outs,etc..on Steroids.

Wrong,
I'm all for the players being compensated. But, the amount of money for universities to accrue by ruling the roost, thus have obscene NIL situations that are defacto cheating without properly calibrated rules and regs. Married to an instant transfer portal, with both in their infant stages, makes for a wild wild west.
There needs to be an equitable situation across the landscape, and the teams for the players. The system hasn't been laid out with a proper groundworks just yet.
This is old time college football cheating on steroids. And we haven't even begun to see all it's unintended consequences and cancerous mutations.

So universities now have to outbid other school's for a player's services ?
What do you mean "now"?
It's been happening for 30+ years.

And we did just fine with guys like Casanova who were just as good and didn’t cause all this drama.

Except that professional athletes, including the minor leaguers, are subject to contract terms. They have performance obligations and the teams own the rights to the players. What we now have in college is a bull shite mix, killing the best aspects of college football in favor of the worst aspects of professional free agency.
Football needs to go the route of baseball. Have NFL farm teams and let players go out of high school. That way you only get the players that truly want to play for the school.

Because it’s hypocritical to criticize kids for taking care of themselves when the schools only care aboit them when they’re useful.
Guess what, if you’re useful enough you have leverage.
Kids just got wise.

Because they were playing against a bunch of other Casanovas

NIL probably isn’t the killer, it’s the ability to transfer with no consequences. It’s a free for all, players transferring during seasons and eligible immediately. Team stability will suffer greatly. What was so wrong with siting out a season and then have all of you eligibility left? I really don’t know why coaches salaries are skyrocketing, I think most will not be able to control the chaos that will only grow to an absurd level.

Nope. He was before my time but I’ve watched a lot of tape and he stood out bigtime.

My point is that if you stopped bringing in the Ricks and Stingley's of the world, you're basically an FCS school.
Is that what you want LSU to be?

quote:Actually its to many bowl games, NIL, Transfer Portal, Same Playoff Teams Year after Year, Poor NCAA enforcement, Covid, Traffic, High coach salaries, if your Team does not make playoffs no upside for Star players to participate. It has become all about the dollar and not the game it will always be that way.

The guy that said we probably need to do like baseball and have minor league farm teams for the NFL is probably the way to go. But, in reality doubtful college football will ever be as good as it once was. Still probably the best sport to watch but certainly heading in the wrong direction.

This is really what I'd like to see in my heart of hearts - I am all for amateur sports in the most restrictive way = play for the excitement of playing, not for glory, money, status.
Of course nobody would pay big bucks to watch that - but it would be more satisfying.
So here I am - wishing we could get the big-bucks guys, but knowing it is somehow just another job.
We don't sit and give cheers for excellence in insurance salesmen do we??

Enough with this trash about transferring. Scholarships are done on a year to year basis. There are no guarantees for the kid, why should there be for the school.
You only get 4-5 years to play you sport until it's either the end of the line or you put enough tape and performances together to get paid for that sport going forward.
I don't see why anyone is against allowing a kid to maximize that time if he isn't getting playing time or the situation isn't working out for him. No other kid on a college campus is prevented from pursuing educational or personal opportunities elsewhere. Why should student athletes be any different, because you don't like it?
Just because something happened in the past doesn't mean it was the best practice or even made it right. This is a better system for the 18-22 year old kids figuring out how to create the best situation for themselves and their families. Sorry that offends you.
