LSU was already national champs. People tend to forget they crowned them before the bowl games. #1 v #12 would never happen during bowl season today.

I do find it crazy this video was posted this past summer before the season started.

At that time, the Sugar Bowl had to find an all-white team for LSU to play. That was as well as they could do.

1. Punting in this era was just atrocious. Clemson had a -2 yard punt to start the 2nd quarter.

2. That LSU defense was fricking nasty. Their ball pursuit is really impressive for the time.

ETA. I'm really surprised at the balanced look from LSU on offense. Lots of option/PA.

Also, 15 yard penalty for holding by OL. How was I unaware of this?

LSU looks very similar to the way they look now and what they wear now.

But I wondered what the heck is Clemson wearing? Looked like black jerseys and orange helmets?

After doing a little research found out that it was actually a dark blue/purple that was specially done for black and white TVs of the time:

You can find out more about the jersey and the Clemson perspective on that Sugar Bowl HERE.

LSU had already won the title. AP and UPI named the champions before bowl games.

Tulane had the "largest steel constructed stadium in the entire world" at the time... 58k seats.

Cool thanks! My father was on that team so get a chance to watch some film on him. When I meet him again up above will have to discuss a missed block or tackle!

Certainly hope LSU is better in the red zone this go around. Two fumbles lost and a turnover on downs just in the first half! ??

Is that what the video says? Actually the Stadium was expanded to 80,735 in 1947, then adjusted to 80,985 in 1955 (a few years before the LSU/Clemson Sugar Bowl).

Interesting. Didn't know that. Will have to do some research.

Didn't the guy who scored the TD have to kick the XP?

CLEMSON

The coach of that team was Frank Howard (not the Washington Senators behemoth) who sounded like someone doing a bad imitation of a southern cracker. He made Bear Bryant sound like a Boston Brahmin.
