Blair said he would last week.

How about SEC?

He said he wasn't then but don't know if that has changed since the SEC tourney just announced they're letting some fans in.

My buddies and I always talk about how he really botched the burrow heisman scramble play against Georgia. The best player in CFB history makes one of the best plays ever and Chris acts like burrow just threw a 12 yard slant.

Hawthorne would've botched it worse because he 100% would've said Burrow threw it to no one or was throwing it away.

His baseball broadcasting is pretty bad, calling home runs line drive and choppers line drives.

He would've been terrible as the main baseball voice. Yeah, he was fine calling the middle innings with Hawthorne, but that dude is not the voice of LSU.

I was talking about his lack of excitement for the moment from day one. That, and his late descriptions of plays. Like when Drost hit his home run today, I think the ball had already cleared the wall before Blair started to say anything about it, and then just made a very casual call, as if it bored him.

But a couple of years ago, no one was allowed to comment negatively about Blair, because we were supposed to let him "grow into the role". The guy wasn't a rookie at calling games, so what did anyone expect would change?

I think he's the type of guy I'd like as a person. He seems nice, well spoken, and engaging in interviews. But this is college sports. There is supposed to be some homerism in the calls. I never cared much if Hawthorne got too excited about a medium fly ball. I get too excited about medium fly balls, because when they are hit off the end of the bat it always fools me right at first. People who got angry with him over that kind of stuff have got to be miserable.

I, for one, miss the heck out of his excitement and his attention to the action. Instead of: "hit to left" (then wait till the outfielder is on the warning track) "this ball is hit deep" (when it's already cleared the fence) "and it's way outta here", all with a slightly elevated volume in his voice. Does he think that everyone is watching the game? Believe it or not, some of us can't access a TV or computer at all times. That's the whole point of radio. Describe the action and stop assuming we already know what's happening.

What do you want? Him to scream “Tigers Win, Tigers Win” like it’s the Warren Morris walk-off?

Why do people so often feel the need to exaggerate every counter argument, and completely whiff on the point?

No one asked for him to scream and act like we won a championship. But the game was on the line, and as soon as the ball is hit deep, you know that's going to score the winning run, and so it should draw a little enthusiasm out of you if you care at all about the team winning.

Someone in this thread made the comment that it was anti-climactic because the play at the plate wasn't close... That's like saying a home run is anti-climactic because there is NO play at the plate, whatsoever. This wasn't a 1st inning sac-fly, it was the bottom of the ninth. The excitement is in winning the game. If the ball had been popped up, there would have been two outs, so it was a big deal when he hit it deep. You don't have to scream; just act like you're excited about winning a game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

That's all we want. I don't think it's hard to grasp that concept.

He needs a super wacky color guy next to him. Blair on his own is just an info guy.

Are they calling from the press box?

The basketball games he and John Brady are calling from a room in the athletic building while watching on tv. And that’s hard to do.

He was boring last year. Terrible hire!

Blair & Hanny would be great together for baseball imo
It’s not Blair, it’s that he doesn’t have anyone good in the booth with him

So many people are putting way too much emphasis on sound when I'm over here just happy to be getting an accurate portrayal of what's going on.

Especially towards the end, Hawthorne would start complaining before a play was even over. It would take Hanny interjecting to get the play call finished, or even to get the next pitch called. It was so fricking frustrating. It was getting bad with Football too. Not only were the calls incorrect (an 8 yard run would curiously end up being 2nd and 7) but he'd complain constantly. For baseball, I honestly think he wasn't paying attention. He would call fastballs, curveballs. High pitches outside pitches. Fly balls would be pop ups to the infield... Thank god he's not here for SECN+ with the radio call overlaid or he'd really be embarrassing himself.

Hanny was going to be a “baseball only” guy for the radio broadcast. LSU wanted to hire a guy to do all three sports. Hanny made the decision that if he wasn’t going to be the play by play guy, he would decline the color analyst offer.

As for yesterday, I’m going to try and give Chris Blair the benefit of the doubt and assume he was tired, as he is in the middle of basketball season and a midweek game with Nicholls doesn’t move the needle much, but...

I was following the game yesterday by radio, and that call on the walk off sac fly was the most boring and uninteresting call I’ve ever heard for a game winner.

I will trade that any day for someone who has no idea of how to explain what is going on at a baseball game. I loved the passion of Hawthorne, but in 30 years he never learned how to explain how a ball comes off of the bat so you had some idea what was going on. Constantly would say "hits it out to left field" with me not knowing if it was hard hit, lined, ground, popped, flied or whatever.

I love passion in the announcer, but baseball is a technical sport and is very difficult to announce on the radio to make the listener feel like he knows what is going on

"Swing and a miss for called strike three!"

"There's a hard grounder to shortstop. Caught!! That retires the side!"

First question why are you listening to the game on the radio. I will donate one of my 10 tv’s to you if you’d like.
