People fell for outlandish headlines and sensational talking heads on their screen, and because they just don't like Kiffin they automatically assume to be true without really knowing all the details. Then the dust settles and everyone takes a step back and picture becomes clearer, what the actual facts are, and then realizes how dumb this whole thing was
Then to save face they'll make a snide comment like "well Kiffin has only himself to blame for his reputation which is why everyone believed this story" and then walk away and act like it's all gravy now.
