Can the NCAA stop this opting out or have they put themselves in a difficult situation?
Posted by Smell the crawfish on 12/1/20 at 4:59 pm726
I think the NCAA has placed itself in a predicament by allowing athletes to opt out so easily. I know the NCAA has said this waiver is only good for this year, but the reality is the NCAA can't stop allowing players to opt out until the virus is under complete control.
I know a vaccine is coming out soon, but those are going to first responders and other essential personnel first. I have a couple of friends that have been told by their doctors to not take the vaccine when it first comes out because they are concerned that not enough research has been done.
Unless something happens very soon that proves there is a safe and effective vaccine out there and it is readily available to everyone, I think there is a real possibility that next year could be another complete cluster freak of a season! I hope I'm wrong, but with our dysfunctional government in control, something tells me I'm not!

Virus or no virus, there is nothing that can prevent a player from sitting out an entire season or quitting in mid-season. It started with sitting out bowl games and has now progressed to this being the new thing unless some rules to prevent this are enacted.

You are free to quit playing football any time you want.
So no.
I dont Think it will keep going after this year.

Opting out is not an NCAA matter. Players have left programs every year during the season. The opt out is just an in vogue term players initially used to justify leaving because of coronavirus concerns,
What Marshall did was the equivalent of what Fournette did in 2016, he just did it a few games earlier. There is no justification to the NCAA required.

Of couse not. The NCAA is the NFL's bitch. You didn't know that? Everything is now focused on saving the NFL Owner Pool from financial disaster.

The NFL could, and it would probably be in their interest to do so. Football is a developmental sport, and the league would much rather take a top talent who’s been properly seasoned rather than be obligated to make a pick based on talent alone.
They would have to institute a quarter requirement to go along with the three years. Players must be three years out of high school and also must accumulate say 128 quarters of play. A quarter counts when a player checks into the game for one play in any given quarter of gameplay.

How do you think the NCAA has any control over players quitting?
None of these players are opting out.
None of these players are opting out.

Not unless the NFL and NCAA come to some agreement that would never make it past the court system. You will either see some guys who quit and go undrafted or drastically drop make an impression on those making decisions, or you will see it continue.

So what should the NCAA do?

I understand they can quit anytime, but will players be able to opt in and out like anytime like they can now?

That is an individual school decision unless and until they retain an agent.

I think Burrow and CEH only had about 120 quarters total in college and they were first rounders. The NFL only needs to see you for about a year on the field as a starter to know if you are worth investing in.

The moment the first Bowl sit-out occurred, my first thought was uh-oh. Sad, but the premier players can only be counted on for two years. Now if the NFL drafts these guys in the 3rd round instead of the 1st, they may have to rethink their position, or let of a few of them be a total bust and it will change again.

I didn’t read a word you wrote but how can they possibly stop players from quitting?

It’s a recruiting/coaching issue, nothing more. Start having character as a priority in the players you recruit and have some character yourself.

So what do you tell a QB that waits his turn, lights it up and is predicted to go early in the draft with only 1 year of playing? This happens all the time.

The only real fix would be to incentivize players to stay, either through actually allowing them to be paid, which the ncaa doesnt want to allow for some archaic reason, or get the nfl to emphasize to the players that it will hurt their stock if they opt out. The first choice is the better option.

A team should get extra scholarships on top of the 25 cap for the players that opt out during the season for whatever reason if this keeps up. Pretty ridiculous
