Can anyone explain why we struggle to recruit and draw O-linemen?

We have a decent amount in the NFL, Coach won the Moore award I’m missing the issue. I know we’ve gotten guys that have been busts (Thomas), but it’s quite perplexing.

Thomas hasn't been healthy so I'll disregard that, but I think development has been hit and miss (or maybe recruitment has been hit and miss). It's really tough to nail it down, to be honest.

Louisiana doesn't typically produce SEC offensive linemen so we have to go out of state for most of those guys. Schools have reputations for being good or bad at developing and using certain positions. O line hasn't been our strong suit over the years.

Is there any chance that Andrew Whitworth could return to his alma mater to work with the OL when he retires from the NFL.

The recruiting numbers are ok. The downside to Louisiana having the best food is that they all got fat and out of shape without normal practices

I don’t think Saturday was due to talent. That was due to scheme. They had no idea how to handle disguised pressure. They and the QB’s had no idea what calls should’ve been made.

You don’t get beat by a three man rush due to lack of talent. That’s due to not being coached correctly.

Everyone, except shanahan, on our line is a four star athlete. The talent is there. But it doesn’t matter how much talent is present if they don’t know who to block.

So, in conclusion, La kids are either less intelligent or less educated?

Everyone knows that the game is won in the trenches. We have to make a concerted to recruit offensive lineman on a national basis. Unfortunately, Louisiana does not produce a large volume of elite offensive lineman. Our offensive line coach must be able to talent. I do not see that happening at this time.

Well to be fair, when we won that award, we def didn't have the best o line in the nation, just the best offense of all time so reward committee was probably like frick it, give it to LSU and skip analyzing 2 dozen lines. We also had one of the worst lines ever the year before. That, the receievers, bad play calling, and average run game is the only reason we didn't see two years of Joe's best. Joe was as good the year before but had totally different tools.

You name one guy to disprove his point? And if I recall LSU wanted him he chose to leave the state but besides the point. Yes Louisiana produces some SEC O linemen but they do not produce them in numbers like d-line, RB, WR, and DB.

That's one player who isn't even here. The point is, the amount of SEC caliber offensive linemen from Louisiana is few and far between. We almost always have to go out of state.

Louisiana isn’t a hotbed for offensive lineman. We have one big time prospect every 5-10 years. I don’t even remember the last time we had an offensive lineman go in the first round.

I have stated this in other threads and know people will not agree or like it but it is an image thing. I grew up in LA but now live in the Houston area. Of course, there are plenty of LSU alumni and fans in this area; however, when you speak to people from TX a lot feel like the academic standards and image of LSU is not up to par with other major universities. I love LSU and don’t necessarily agree totally with this idea but people here would rather send there kids to A&M or UT due to this kinda looking down their nosies mentality. This really doesn’t affect the skill position recruits as LA produces those in numbers and even pulls a ton of out of state kids. But for some reason the OL and QB recruits seem to come from more affluent backgrounds on average.

If TX feels this way then pulling kids from the Midwest is quite the choir. I know there are many other factors but if LSU could improve their academic standing/image I believe we would start seeing better recruits along the OL. We definitely have the culture, atmosphere, and food but lack in that area. Now let the downvotes begin.

We have HOF OL Kevin Mawae that wants the job badly...why wait on Whitworth to retire?

That is a very true statement but they have zero issues sending their kids to Alabama, Clemson and even Oklahoma.
