Not sure I can recall a single inning or outing where he looked comfortable on the mound.

His velocity was not as advertised. TBH, he appeared to be a long term project.

Oh how we love to shite on our former players. When he was with LSU he just needed more time and more reps. Now that he is gone he is a bag chaser.

If hes able to put it together over there then good for him but wish he would have stuck it out here and developed.

He was looking for the best NIL deal since Lsu was going to cut his substantially. He’ll be a bust in the SEC.

They are probably right. If he throws strikes, he becomes pretty immediately a good pitcher.

Not sure what else this kid expected out of CJJ (or Leskie). I mean the kid can’t even get in the vicinity of the strike-zone regardless of what type of “real game” situation he’s brought in to face. Walks, HBP’s, WP’s etc.

BTW: I have NO DOUBT he’ll have it all figured out b4 he plays LSU next year & he’s bound to throw a 9 inning complete game no-hitter!! Lol.

Are we supposed to feel some sort of allegiance to him now because he pitched for 9 innings?

His velocity was up to 98 in the fall, it definitely dropped off once the season came around. Who knows why, them trying to get him to throw differently or the rumblings surrounding him having stamina issues and not being able to throw that much.

At IMG his senior year he threw like 27 total innings all season. It's possible he just isnt used to throwing near as much as a college throwing program wants you to.

And if Kling hits the ball he will immediately become a good hitter.

Obvious analysis……..

They do have a super short season, but the majority of pitchers coming in from high school we take seem to throw in the 70-80ish inning range over the course of a high school season (last season there), so he definitely was behind the curve in terms of stamina I bet.

Now this isnt accounting for throwing outside the high school season/travel ball and stuff like that. But 27 innings is not much for a high school (starting) pitcher at all.

Just some examples of pitchers we've taken out of high school:
Guidry - threw 45 innings senior season
Shores - threw 72 innings senior season
Brown - threw 73 innings senior season
Primeaux - threw 86 innings senior season
Herring - threw 87 innings senior season

Proving how bad the recruiting services are.

Anyone who watched the kid pitch could see he was very raw.

There aren't really any recruiting service rankings for baseball. Everything is draft oriented.

But there are so many differences in the way guys are rated for the draft vs the way they can be expected to impact a college program in both the short and long term.

It's not an issue with where Johnson was rated. He's still a very big time professional prospect, as he was when we signed him.

It's an issue of people taking ratings that are saying one thing and trying to twist them to say something else.

Yes, the pros see things in the long term. Colleges see things a lot differently. Some freshmen have to help right away. 99.9% iof the drafted kids are projected to help at best years later.

I think its safe to say Jay didn't like his return on the NIL investment last year, and he wasn't going to do it again with Johnson.
