I don’t follow recruiting or really any offseason stuff any more, so I guess totally missed how this whole situation developed.

Were there debates about this at the SEC spring meetings and what was the vote?

I enjoy Lane bringing up how stupid it is in almost every press conference, but I’m sure that is just another stick in Sankey’s arse about him. Was Lane one of the only coaches that was and continues to be vocal about it?

Were there any schools or presidents that were vocally opposed or did the conference brass all fall in line and it’s just the coaches that didn’t like it.

I just don’t understand the rationale for it and what the supposed benefits were supposed to be.

TLDR

Sankey is a puss. Let the BIG10 bully him cause they “play 9 conference games”. Which everyone with a set of eyeballs know it’s not close to the same

I am not arguing with your post from a strategy standpoint of trying to win the national championship. However, I will say that the point of all of this is entertainment. That is why we watch. I would gladly have an extra game against an SEC opponent rather than McNeese State. Those throwaway games have almost no entertainment value. In fact, it has greatly decreased in the last few years because watching potential future stars in those games has become irrelevant. The chances of that player being on the team next year are small.

So, I know the main rationale was money. However, that leads to more entertaining schedules as well.

Because the Big 10 baited the Sankey into doing it because they said their conference was tougher due to the 9 game schedule, knowing that if the SEc followed suit we would catabolize ourselves and help the big 10 look better, which is best for the CFP due to the fact that the committee only cares about wins and losses and not who who actually played.

Sankey decided that he didn't take enough of a hit by getting a lesser TV deal than the Big 10, so then he decided to give more product to ESPN on an already discounted deal.

Then of course we have to base our rotation around what Bama wants because God forbid the world misses a year without one of CFB's greatest rivalries in Bama vs. Tennessee

When referencing college football, any time the question starts with, “What was the reasoning,” the answer is always - every single time - money.

Big Ten complained, Sankey obliged; didnt even ask for them to schedule 1 P4 OOC in return, so like 1/3 of the conference played nobody OOC this season including multiple teams still in playoff contention there (Indiana for example)

He is just following suit, and did it 1 year too early with the expansion to 24 next year, not this season

The stupidity shown though, was all Sankey’s though.
He pushed for 9 games WITHOUT GETTING ANYTHING IN RETURN!
True, the president’s all went for it for the bucks, but to give up that kind of negotiating tool is just beyond the pale. He is not good at business.

100% correct.

I'd rather have a 10-game SEC schedule and 2 OOC games against other P4 teams. I have ZERO interest in cupcake games.

Football is entertainment. Give me 12 compelling regular season games that I can get excited about instead of a watered down schedule just to ensure we make the playoff.

But of course, the other P4 conferences should do the same.

It is the only way to ensure you visit each stadium every four years, while keeping 3 permanent opponents for the untouchable rivalries.
