yeah LA, I won't be happy if this happens. I'd consider a boycott of LSU football games and merchandise for a while.

No one actually handles the PR of the band as far as I know. There is no representative. I haven't heard from anyone either that the band department was in bad shape, all the money comes from athletics so I have no idea how a budget cut made by the school could downsize the band
Just for travel costs..For the bowl game, easily $500 were spent on every single student, and for the ones that the athletic department flew into BR, even more..We already dont take a full band to away games.

I'll consider not donating to LSU.

There should be one. The band is a untapped resource. Oh I know it wouldn't be alot but I think it could cover some of its own expense.

Which the more and more I think about it, this story of cuts doesn't pass the smell test. Their is something else going on here.

Well, I'm a recent alum and only donate about $100 a year. That's still big for me especially with being back in school. I think this is terrible. If Miles loves LSU so much, he should put his money where his mouth is and donate $100,000 and keep 100 members in the band.

I don't think you read what I said. It costs way more then $500 to send a single student to the bowl trips but what I was saying is that the money comes from the Athletic Department, not the education budget. They are not making "Cuts" to the athletic budget as that is ran by TAF. They are making cuts to the education budget, so unless they are firing staff or getting rid of instruments, I don't see where they are saving money

what type of fundraising efforts do the band participate in?
they use substantial resources, but what money are they bringing to the table?

Then your friends are full of shite. I have colleagues in both music departments at Auburn and Alabama (the directors of both marching bands). What your friend probably has is a Music SCHOLARSHIP, part of which is an agreement to play in the band. This is not the same as a stipend, which all band members receive. I have several former students at Alabama and Auburn on such scholarships. These are not stipends. you may be right about 640 instead of 740, either way it was certainly still higher than anyone else at the time.
From the Alabama Band Website:
From the Auburn Band Website:
No mention of stipends.
From the Alabama Band Website:
quote:
A limited number of scholarships are available for participating in the Million Dollar Band. The range of scholarship assistance is from $250.00 to $1000.00 per fall semester. The majority of our members participate without scholarship assistance.
From the Auburn Band Website:
quote:
In addition to the opportunities listed above, the Auburn University Band Department also offers scholarships to deserving students in an AU Bands ensemble (both music majors and non music majors). These scholarships are dependent on participation in our various ensembles. The availability and amount of these scholarships vary from year to year, and they are distributed based on playing ability and instrumentation needs for each ensemble.
No mention of stipends.

Tigerama and the sale of merchandise.... thats about it

so do
women's basketball
swimming and diving
track and field
softball
volleyball
gymnastics
cross country
tennis
golf
but the athletic department doesn't make any cuts there. And I'd be willing to bet that TAF receives more donations from Tiger Band alums than all of those sports.
edited for spelling

we need all those sports to satisfy title IX so that we CAN have football and baseball
if they make a title IX for band, then we can discuss this further

they can have them, but couldn't they cut back on travel accomodations? They certainly don't need ANY of those men's sports for Title IX. Couldn't they cut the golf team and probably save hundreds of thousands if not millions?

Once again, a great alumnus for LSU is a part of the PGA. We may have another one at LSU now that will be another great donor to LSU.

I wouldn't argue with that so what need to happen is all future donations band alums needs to go with a hitch that all fund donated by them go to the band directly.
Better yet make the band independent of the athletic dept.

I know that and you should know me better than to think I'm one of the people who think people go for the band. The difference is, people put their eyes on the band more often than ANY of those sports I mentioned so why not do what it takes to keep it looking good for the entire nation? Look at Florida's raggedy band. They are an embarassment.
You can have your ideas and whatnot and that's fine, but my donation (albeit small) to TAF is ending when this goes through.

For the most part LSU Athletics and the academic side are seperate. Just curious on why they put that little blurb in the email last night when Athletics pays for the band.
We all are aware of LSU Athletics cutting the full band trip to an away SEC game to save money.
Whats next beside lowering the number of tiger band.
The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted.
LSU will be sending pep bands to each of the four road conference games in 2009. The band will bus to and from each location on the day of the game for three of those games with no hotel stay in order to facilitate the cost necessary to send a pep band to Washington. There will be no full band trip to any road game except a post-season bowl game. These measures will result in cost savings of $125,000 to $150,000 for the athletics program during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

All of that is wel and good, but tiger football without the golden band isn't tiger football IMO.
