$1000 to be in band is still off the charts ridiculous imo.
Someone in the band told me how this came about. Originally it was $640, which at the time was the 160 hours put in by each Tiger Band member per year multiplied by the University Standard Wage which was $4 an hour. That was back in the 80's. Supposedly when the band moved they asked that the pay be upgraded to sanction inflation and that is why it is now $1000. For the amount of work all those people do I think it is well deserved.

Actually, we received a smaller stipend before that $640 that we got and then it was increased to $640 when Tiger Band moved from the original part of the west side stands to the Northwest corner where they sat until they moved in 2008 to the north.
In the Spit Valve that first year, the slogan was "Tiger Band...it's not just an adventure, it's a Job."

I have no problem paying the band IF we have the budget for it, but if the reality of the situation someone else on campus is going to lose their job because we're paying $1000 stipends to band members, then I also have no problem cutting it back.

Its paid from athletics. I doubt anyone in athletics will be losing a job.
The university, well they are cutting facility services, grad student assistantships, etc... all the little guys.

This is what happens when the state makes a budget thinking oil is going to stay at $130 a barrel and then gets fricked because they were too stupid to realize the price may drop way down.

State government must cut nearly $250 million from its rolls by mid-January.
College officials are expecting to assume a sizable share of the burden because higher education budgets are not constitutionally protected.
However, there are challenges in cutting higher education too much because federal stimulus dollars currently plugging funding gaps for colleges have rules that the college budgets cannot be cut below certain levels.
Davis said last week that the Jindal administration may seek a waiver from the federal government that would allow more cuts for higher education.

Excuse me if I sound ignorant but lets say they cut 25-30 out the band. If its piccolos and woodpipes is the band really going to sound any different?
You're correct. Woodwinds are useless on the football field. Cut em all and turn TB into one big Drum Corps. Take away the Piccolos and Clarinets and you'll never notice a difference. Saxophones are woodwinds but they DO make a little noise, so I'd save them from the chopping block.
Still need more cuts, then Ax the saxes and make it ALL BRASS and PERCUSSION. Change the name to the L.S.U. "Tiger Regiment" Marching Brass and Percussion. (Never cared for "Golden Band from Tigerland")
I personally don't think the budget cuts are going to have much effect on TB. You just don't F with TB. Too visible and popular. Will be too much uproar. Too many other areas that could be cut instead.
BTW, the service awards were peanuts back in the 70's/early 80's. They can cut the current $1000.00 in half and they would still be more than we got back then. I didn't do Tiger Band for the money at all. I did it for the love of LSU, representing the University and for the fun/exhiliration of the Game Day experience. Would have done it for free. LSU didn't have the major I wanted or even any individual classes in the subject that I was interested in, but I attended anyway solely for the Tiger Band experience. At the time, I didn't have any qualms, but now some 28 years down the road, I have a lot of regrets from an education standpoint for doing that, but that's neither here nor there......

Tiger Band will add flambeauxs to collect money next year.
They can get Trent Johnson and some of the basketball players to do it. They'd look good twirling fire in the white Do-Rags and Tunics.

I'll pledge $100. Tiger band rocks. What the heck is a mission-oriented university?

Yet Jindal's staff is one of the highest paid of any Louisiana governor ever. Funny how when budget cuts have to be made, higher education is always a target. LSU is one of the poorest-funded flagship universities in the entire nation, and Jindal wants to cut their budget ever more. It's good to see that he's got his priorities straight.

Higher education is always a target because education budgets are not constitutionally protected.
However many LSU officials (off the record) are wishing Jindal would use some of the rainy day funds to offset the cuts.

I was speaking in hyperbole, but making a little donation would be a nice gesture. Every $1,000 would be 1 member paid that the athletic department could save money on. He's overpaid anyways...

when having an NCAA game at the pmac, Les has bought tickets so the students could attend for free.
Les has done several things like that in the past to help the student attend events.
Hopefully he'll step up to the plate here.
